Alex is a humanoid robot developed by IHMC and named one of five winners in the U.S. Army’s xTechHumanoid competition. The Army says the system has impact-resilient actuators, ballistic protection, and a control approach that combines artificial intelligence with human input. The win is an evaluation milestone—not evidence that the Army bought Alex, approved it for combat, or deployed it.
What is the Army’s Alex robot?
Alex is IHMC’s humanoid system, selected by the Army as one of five winners in xTechHumanoid, a competition intended to survey commercial humanoid technologies and assess their maturity. The Army described Alex as having impact-resilient actuators and ballistic protection, with “hybrid autonomy” that combines AI and human control for complex and dangerous missions. The Army’s announcement does not provide a technical specification sheet or quantified performance results.
Those descriptions should be read as features the Army attributes to the system, not as proof of how it performs in operational conditions. The announcement does not state an armor rating, operating time, payload, task-completion rate, navigation benchmark, precise limits on autonomy, or how often an operator must intervene. Nor does it identify a specific mission Alex has successfully completed.
Did the Army buy or deploy Alex?
The competition win does not establish a purchase, combat approval, or operational deployment. The Army characterized xTechHumanoid as a way to identify promising commercial approaches, create a technical baseline for an emerging capability area, and let Army and Joint Force stakeholders examine the maturity of commercial humanoid robotics. The public announcement gives no procurement or deployment timeline.

What happened in the xTechHumanoid competition?
The Army announced five winners on September 11, 2026, after finalists demonstrated technologies at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, on September 9–10. The Army published its announcement on September 28, 2026. The competition process had distinct stages:
- 103 white-paper submissions were received.
- 10 companies advanced as finalists.
- Nine finalists demonstrated their technologies at Quantico.
- Five winners were named.
The counts describe participation and selection—not robot performance or readiness. The Army said the competition was meant to give stakeholders a direct view of commercial technology maturity and help identify possible future military applications.

What did the other winners contribute?
The winners were not five interchangeable humanoid robots. The Army selected technologies with different roles, including components that could address problems around power, sensing, and control:
| Winner | Role described by the Army |
|---|---|
| IHMC’s Alex | Humanoid robot platform |
| ACES Group | Integrated power system |
| Hydroplane | Compact mobile power-generation systems intended for long-duration power in contested logistics environments |
| RAS Labs | Tactile sensors for detecting force, object form, and slip |
| Velocity Explorations | Software for translating trusted information and command intent into discrete robotic actions |
This spread highlights a system-level challenge: a useful robot depends on more than its frame. Power supply, sensing and manipulation, command interfaces, and human oversight all affect what a platform can do. The Army specifically noted continuing work on power and energy constraints.

How is Alex controlled, and what could it do?
The Army’s term “hybrid autonomy” indicates a combination of AI and human control, but the announcement does not explain the division of authority. It does not specify which decisions Alex can make independently, which actions require operator approval, what communications link is used, or what happens if that link is disrupted.
The Army frames robotics and autonomy broadly as ways to reduce soldiers’ exposure to dangerous or physically demanding work, preserve combat power, and give commanders more options. That is the rationale for exploring the technology, not a list of tasks Alex is confirmed to perform. The public description does not name a completed Alex mission.

What would show whether Alex is ready for practical use?
A competition selection is an initial assessment, not a substitute for evidence from representative tasks and environments. Useful questions for any future evaluation would include:
- How long the robot operates under load, and how power needs change with the task.
- Whether it completes representative tasks reliably, including manipulation and movement in realistic environments.
- What level of ballistic protection is provided and under what conditions.
- How much maintenance is required and how quickly faults can be addressed.
- How resilient its communications are, and how it behaves when links are degraded or lost.
- How frequently operators must intervene and what actions remain under human control.
These are assessment criteria, not published Alex results. As general historical context, Defense News reported in 2024 that Army leaders saw networking, cyber protection, and suitable autonomy as challenges for human-machine integration. That reporting predates the 2026 competition and is not an Alex-specific technical assessment.
