Keep rate control at the n8n workflow boundary, not inside Sanity MCP. Split incoming work into bounded batches, serialize or pace requests with Loop Over Items and Wait, enable bounded retries for transient failures, and paginate large reads. At the Sanity boundary, use a server-side organization token, restrict attached sources, and add a GROQ filter when the workflow needs a narrower read scope.
What Path 1 is designed to prevent
HTTP 429 means the upstream service is receiving too many requests. Retrying immediately can extend the burst and produce more 429 responses. n8n’s documented controls are Retry On Fail, Loop Over Items with Wait, HTTP request batching, and pagination.
“Path 1” is an architecture label for this article, not a Sanity or n8n product name. The design applies whether n8n calls Sanity’s HTTP APIs directly or reaches Sanity content through its hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) service.
Path 1 architecture, step by step
- Ingress and work queue: Receive the event or job in n8n and place the work into a bounded item set. Do not create an unbounded fan-out of Sanity calls.
- Rate-aware request loop: Use Loop Over Items to process a controlled number of items, or configure batching in the HTTP Request node. Insert a Wait node between calls or batches so the request rate is intentional rather than determined by branch execution speed.
- Backoff decision: Treat status 429 as a pacing signal. If the response includes
Retry-After, use that value for the next wait. Otherwise apply a bounded delay longer than the upstream limit you have established. Never loop on an immediate retry. - Sanity MCP boundary: Connect to https://mcp.sanity.io with OAuth or a token. Keep the organization credential on the server side, select only the sources the workflow needs, and use a GROQ filter when a narrower read scope is required.
- Validation and observability: Test the workflow through n8n’s MCP workflow tools or the n8n API. Record request counts, response statuses, retry counts, wait durations, and failed item identifiers.
- Deployment choice: Select n8n Cloud or self-hosted n8n according to who owns network access, credential storage, scaling, and monitoring. The public n8n API is available on Cloud Starter, Pro, and Enterprise plans and on all self-hosted editions; every request requires an API key.
Implement the rate controls in n8n
Batch work before it reaches Sanity
Use a batching node or Loop Over Items to cap the number of items handled in one pass. Batching reduces burst size and makes the number of possible requests visible. Keep batch size small enough that a single execution cannot create a sudden spike, especially when one item can trigger multiple Sanity operations.

Serialize calls with Loop Over Items and Wait
Place the Sanity request inside the loop and put a Wait node on the path before the next iteration. This is the clearest arrangement when each item produces one request and the provider’s limit is expressed as a requests-per-time-window rule. If a batch endpoint is available, send a batch instead of adding more parallel branches.
Configure Retry On Fail as controlled recovery
In the node that performs the request, enable Retry On Fail only for failures that are plausibly transient. Configure a finite retry count and a pause between attempts. For a 429 response, prefer the provider’s Retry-After value; where it is absent, use a conservative fixed or increasing delay. A retry policy cannot replace a queue or durable rate limiter: it should recover an occasional failure, not absorb unlimited traffic.
Paginate large reads
Do not request an entire dataset in one call. Use the API’s pagination controls and process each page through the same batching and wait logic. Persist the cursor or page marker when a run must resume after a failure. This limits response size and prevents a large read from monopolizing the request budget.

Control concurrency explicitly
Parallel branches multiply calls. Review every branch, loop, and trigger that can reach Sanity, then calculate the worst-case number of requests per execution. Keep concurrency bounded unless you have verified the applicable project, organization, endpoint, and plan limits. There is no universal Sanity MCP quota stated for every deployment.

Use the hosted endpoint and an appropriate authentication flow
Sanity’s hosted MCP service is at https://mcp.sanity.io and supports MCP-compatible clients with OAuth or token authentication. Authorization is established when the connection is created, so the credential used by n8n determines what the MCP session can access.
Keep organization credentials server-side
Store the organization token in n8n’s credential store or another server-side secret system. Do not place it in a client-side script, a webhook response, a workflow parameter exposed to users, or execution data that is routinely exported.

Apply least privilege and source scoping
Sanity identifies an organization token with the Context Viewer permission as the least-privilege built-in role that works for Context MCP. Attach only the Sanity sources needed by the workflow. When source attachment alone is broader than the job requires, add a GROQ filter to narrow the readable documents or fields. Recheck permissions whenever a source, project, or organization changes.
Validate behavior and make 429s diagnosable
Test the workflow through the correct n8n surface
n8n MCP workflow tools and the n8n public API are separate integration surfaces with separate credentials and limits. Use the MCP tools when an MCP client is the validator; use the API when an external test harness or deployment system manages workflows. For API calls, supply an API key and paginate large result sets. Relevant n8n MCP operations have a maximum result limit of 100.

n8n Cloud or self-hosted n8n?
| Decision axis | n8n Cloud | Self-hosted n8n |
|---|---|---|
| Operational ownership | n8n operates the service; you configure workflows and credentials. | Your team operates the n8n runtime, upgrades, backups, and capacity. |
| Network path to Sanity | Requests originate from n8n’s hosted environment; verify that your Sanity access policy permits that path. | You control egress routing, private networking, proxies, and firewall rules. |
| Credential storage | Use n8n’s managed credential mechanism and restrict workflow access. | Protect the n8n database, encryption key, host, and secret-management integration yourself. |
| Scaling controls | Use workflow batching, waits, and bounded concurrency; platform limits still apply. | You can tune workers and queues, but extra workers can multiply Sanity requests unless workflow-level limits remain in place. |
| Observability | Use n8n execution data and your external monitoring. | You can add host, queue, proxy, and application telemetry, but must operate it. |
| Public API availability | Available on Cloud Starter, Pro, and Enterprise plans. | Available on all self-hosted editions. |
Direct Sanity HTTP API or Sanity MCP?
| Concern | Direct Sanity HTTP API | Sanity MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol and client | Use ordinary HTTP clients and n8n’s HTTP Request node. | Use an MCP-compatible client connected to Sanity’s hosted MCP endpoint. |
| Authentication | Configure the HTTP API credentials required by the project and operation. | Authenticate the MCP connection with OAuth or a token; authorization is set at connection time. |
| Query model | Sanity’s HTTP reference covers query and mutation APIs. | Designed for agent-oriented content operations and GROQ-driven access. |
| Write capability | Use the documented mutation APIs when the token and workflow permit writes. | Confirm that the MCP operation exposed to your client supports the intended action before designing a write workflow. |
| Scope control | Apply project, dataset, query, and token controls available to the HTTP API. | Use organization-token permissions, attached sources, and GROQ filters together. |
| Rate-limit handling | Handle 429 responses in n8n’s HTTP Request path. | Keep the same n8n pacing and retry boundary around MCP calls; MCP does not remove upstream limits. |
Troubleshoot the common failure branches
Repeated 429 responses
Reduce batch size and concurrency, increase the wait, and honor Retry-After when supplied. Check for hidden parallel triggers or multiple workflow executions using the same Sanity project.
401 or 403 responses
Check the MCP connection credential, token location, organization role, attached sources, and project access. Do not respond to an authorization failure by increasing retries.
Successful connection but missing content
Inspect source attachment and the GROQ filter. A valid Context MCP connection can still return no documents when the selected source or filter excludes them.

Large reads time out or exceed result limits
Paginate the read, process pages incrementally, and keep each n8n execution bounded. When using n8n MCP tools, account for the documented maximum result limit of 100 for relevant operations.
Retries create duplicate writes
Separate read retries from write retries. For mutations, use an idempotency strategy supported by the operation, or record a durable operation key before retrying. Never assume that repeating a timed-out write is harmless.
