Parents and teens can set privacy choices together, require parent approval to relax certain settings, receive alerts about group activity, and manage the teen’s use of Channels, Status, and Meta AI. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain private and end-to-end encrypted when the controls are on. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not yet be available in every region.
What parents can control
The controls are designed for a parent and teen to configure together. Parents can choose who can see the teen’s profile photo and who can add the teen to groups. If the teen wants to loosen those settings, the parent must approve the change with a PIN they set.
Parents can also manage the teen’s use of Channels and Status, including which Status updates the teen sees and who can see the teen’s Status. For Meta AI, they can choose between the default 13+ setting and the stricter “Limited Content” option. WhatsApp has not detailed exactly what content that option limits, so its label should not be taken to mean any specific list of blocked topics or material.
What group alerts cover
Parents can receive notifications when the teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group grows meaningfully in size. WhatsApp does not say these alerts reveal message contents; they concern group activity.

Messages and calls remain private, WhatsApp says
WhatsApp says that even with parental controls enabled, a teen’s personal messages and calls remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption. That is WhatsApp’s description of the feature’s privacy design, not an independent audit of it. The controls are presented as a way for families to set boundaries without giving parents access to read personal conversations.
How to set up the teen controls
WhatsApp’s official guide says setup begins in WhatsApp on the teen’s phone. The parent confirms the teen’s birthdate, then links the parent’s account. Linking a parent or guardian account is required. The detailed sequence may vary with the app experience available to the account.

- On the teen’s phone, open WhatsApp and look for the parental controls setup option.
- Follow the prompts to confirm the teen’s birthdate.
- Link the parent or guardian’s WhatsApp account as prompted.
- Review the available privacy, group-alert, Channels, Status, and Meta AI choices together; set a parent PIN for approval of changes to the specified privacy settings.
WhatsApp says the controls are optional and can be adjusted or switched off. Check the in-app settings rather than assuming the option is already available.
Availability is gradual and regional
WhatsApp says the teen controls are rolling out gradually and may not yet be available in a user’s region. Its guide does not provide a complete regional schedule, so there is no confirmed date by which every family should expect to see the setting.

Teen controls are different from pre-teen managed accounts
WhatsApp has a separate “parent-managed accounts” feature for pre-teens. That feature includes parent review of message requests from unknown contacts, choices about who can contact the child and which groups they can join, a parent PIN, and activity updates. Those pre-teen accounts are distinct from the optional controls for teen accounts described here; the pre-teen feature is also rolling out gradually.
