Gallium nitride (GaN) is a semiconductor material used in both power-conversion devices and radio-frequency (RF) systems. Its applications range from USB-C chargers to data-center power, electric-vehicle conversion, solar equipment, industrial drives, and communications. A GaN portfolio can include discrete transistors, integrated power devices, drivers, controllers, and design resources; the right choice depends on the voltage, circuit task, integration needs, and thermal and layout constraints.

What a GaN portfolio includes

GaN is a material platform, not one product category. In power electronics, vendors offer discrete transistors as well as integrated devices or power stages. Some integrated products combine GaN HEMTs with a driver, protection, or control functions. Supporting components and design resources can include gate drivers, controllers, evaluation boards, application notes, reference designs, and modeling tools.

The details vary by vendor. Infineon describes discrete and integrated products across a 40 V to 700 V range; that is a description of its portfolio, not a universal GaN voltage specification. Texas Instruments describes integrated power stages that combine GaN HEMTs with drivers, protection, and control. See the Infineon GaN portfolio and TI GaN overview for the vendors’ descriptions.

Where GaN is used

GaN devices are components within larger systems: a transistor or power stage helps perform conversion, but it is not itself a complete charger, inverter, or power supply. These examples show the breadth of applications, not a guarantee that GaN is the best choice for every design in a category.

Market Examples What to keep in mind
Consumer electronics Smartphone adapters, USB Type-C power supplies, and other consumer power supplies A GaN USB-C charger is a familiar example, but it represents only the consumer end of a much wider portfolio. See Infineon’s GaN explainer and TI’s application presentation.
Data centers and telecom Server and data-center power supplies, intermediate bus converters, telecom supplies, and 5G equipment GaN is an enabling power-conversion component in the system. Infineon lists these uses for devices with integrated drivers: GaN with integrated driver.
Automotive Onboard chargers and high-voltage isolated DC/DC conversion for electric vehicles Required voltage range and qualification depend on the particular device and vehicle design. See Infineon’s high-voltage GaN transistor page.
Energy and grid Solar inverters and microinverters, energy storage, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and grid equipment Application examples do not establish a blanket performance advantage over other semiconductor technologies. See TI’s overview and TI’s application presentation.
Industrial Industrial AC/DC power, robotics, factory automation, and motor drives Switching behavior, gate drive, and physical layout are important design considerations. See Infineon’s integrated-driver applications and TI’s application examples.
RF and specialized systems RF communications, 5G, radar, satellite, optoelectronics, and sensing RF GaN amplifiers and power-conversion transistors are different device applications; do not treat their design requirements as interchangeable. See Infineon’s GaN explainer.

Why designers consider GaN—and what claims mean

Texas Instruments describes GaN as a wide-bandgap semiconductor that enables faster switching, higher efficiency, and greater power density than traditional silicon solutions. Infineon also associates GaN with faster switching, lower switching losses, and potential efficiency or power-density benefits. These are technology and vendor claims, not outcomes guaranteed for every device, topology, or operating condition. Circuit design, switching frequency, thermal management, and layout affect the result.

TI reports more than 80 million hours of reliability testing for its GaN devices. That figure is TI’s reported device-testing total, not an industry-wide statistic or a substitute for checking the qualification and reliability information for a specific part. TI also presents “up to 60% smaller magnetics” as a potential design benefit of higher switching speeds. This is a vendor-stated potential, not a universal measured reduction. Both claims are on TI’s GaN overview.

  1. Set the electrical requirements. Identify the operating voltage and power range, conversion task, and topology. Confirm that the particular device—not just the vendor portfolio—fits those requirements.
  2. Choose the implementation. Decide whether a discrete transistor or an integrated device better suits the design. Integration may include functions such as a driver, protection, or control, but compare the actual features of the candidate parts.
  3. Check switching and efficiency data under relevant conditions. Compare measurements or specifications only when operating conditions and test setups are comparable; do not assume a headline benefit transfers directly to your circuit.
  4. Review thermal, package, and layout constraints. Consider cooling, board layout, gate-drive compatibility, and switching behavior together. High-speed designs can be sensitive to layout and drive choices.
  5. Verify reliability and qualification needs. Check the device-level documentation for the application and region. A vendor’s portfolio-level statement or aggregate testing figure does not establish that every part has the qualification your system requires.
  6. Assess design support and supply needs. Look for relevant evaluation boards, application notes, reference designs, modeling resources, and available driver or controller components. Infineon lists these resources on its GaN portfolio page.
