These are separate processes; neither has one universal unlock code.
Choose the right kind of unlock

If you forgot the screen PIN, pattern, or password
Try the previous lock only if the phone qualifies
Samsung says its previous-lock recovery feature applies to Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later after the screen PIN, password, or pattern has been changed. The phone temporarily retains the immediately previous lock for 72 hours. Samsung says the “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” option may appear after five or more failed unlock attempts.
- Confirm that the phone runs One UI 6.1 or later and that you changed its screen lock within the past 72 hours.
- On the lock screen, after the required failed attempts, select the displayed “Forgot” option. The precise wording may vary by model and software version.
- Enter the immediately previous PIN, password, or pattern when prompted, then set a new screen lock.
Samsung allows the former method to be used once per lock type. Three incorrect entries of that previous method end further attempts, so do not keep guessing. If the option is absent, the phone may not meet the conditions, or its software may show different screens.

If the former lock is unavailable or unknown
Samsung documents erasing the device as the recovery route when the lock cannot be recovered. In SmartThings Find, sign in with the Samsung account associated with the phone and choose “Erase data.” Samsung warns that this permanently deletes device data. If the phone is offline, the erase takes effect the next time it connects.
Before erasing, check whether photos, contacts, and other important files are backed up to a Samsung, Google, computer, or other account. Anything stored only on the phone may be lost. Samsung’s instructions are available at How to unlock your Galaxy device if you forgot the security PIN, pattern or password. Samsung does not offer a way in this guidance to remotely reveal the forgotten local credential.

If the screen is damaged or does not respond
Use a mouse or keyboard for a cracked, untouchable screen
Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance describes connecting a mouse and keyboard through a USB adapter to navigate a Galaxy device with a cracked screen. A USB-C OTG adapter may be needed; check that the adapter supports OTG and has the connector required by your mouse or keyboard. This can restore input when the display remains usable, but it does not bypass the screen lock. See Samsung’s Galaxy screen-unlock troubleshooting.
For a black or blank display
If appropriate for the symptoms, Samsung suggests holding Power and Volume Down for 20 seconds to force a restart, then charging the phone for at least an hour. These are display and power troubleshooting steps, not an unlock method or a guaranteed fix. If the problem persists, Samsung advises contacting an authorized service center.

If another carrier’s SIM is rejected
A carrier or network lock is handled by the carrier that originally locked the phone, not by the screen-lock recovery process. Eligibility depends on that carrier’s current policy and your device and account history.
AT&T
Use AT&T’s device unlock request page to check the phone and submit a request. AT&T says eligible Samsung devices on an AT&T Wireless plan may unlock automatically after requirements are met. Its criteria include account and device conditions—for example, account standing, applicable payments or contract completion, and no lost, stolen, or fraud report. Verify the current requirements for your situation directly with AT&T.

Verizon has its own device unlocking policy and unlocking FAQs. Check the current policy for the exact device and account rather than relying on an old waiting-period claim.
Check compatibility before switching
An unlocked phone is not guaranteed to work fully on every carrier. Verify the exact Galaxy Note20 model or variant against the destination carrier’s supported bands and features before changing service. Samsung’s Galaxy Note20 support page identifies one regional model variant; do not assume its specifications apply to every Note20.
