Their cause, frequency, and whether Apple considers the appearance a defect are not established. If you notice a change, document it and contact Apple or the seller for guidance on your specific phone.
What owners have reported
An October 1, 2026 report describes complaints about lighter or pinkish discoloration near the rear camera lenses. Some owners said the appearance did not wipe away. These are accounts relayed by a secondary publication, not a verified study or an Apple diagnosis. Phandroid’s report characterizes the complaints as limited, but the number of affected phones is unknown.
The complaints described in that report involved black and burgundy phones. It said silver and glacier owners had not reported the issue as of October 1; that is a time-bound snapshot of complaints, not evidence that those finishes cannot be affected.
Is the camera-area change a defect?
That has not been established. The available report raises a finish or coating issue as a possibility, but does not confirm it or identify another cause. The appearance reported by owners should not be treated as proof of a manufacturing defect, a product-wide problem, or a specific chemical reaction.

Phandroid said Apple had not commented publicly when its report was published. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement does not mention camera-area discoloration or a remedy. This does not establish whether Apple has made a later statement or addressed individual customer cases privately.
What to do if you see discoloration
- Document the appearance. Take clear photos in consistent lighting and note when you first noticed the change. Keep any purchase or service records relevant to your phone.
- Ask Apple or the seller for case-specific guidance. Describe what you see and share the photos. The available sources do not establish warranty coverage, return deadlines, or a universal remedy, so confirm the terms that apply to your purchase.
- Avoid aggressive cleaning. Apple’s general iPhone cleaning guidance says textured glass or Ceramic Shield can show material transfer from objects such as denim or pocket contents. It advises against bleach and hydrogen peroxide. That guidance does not identify the cause of the camera-area reports or establish that cleaning will remove them.
The sources do not establish that a case or camera protector prevents or fixes this appearance. Avoid relying on either as a proven solution.

Which iPhone 18 Pro models are involved?
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with black, silver, glacier, and burgundy finishes; availability was scheduled to begin September 18. The October 1 report’s complaints concerned black and burgundy devices, but the evidence is incomplete and does not establish that the issue is limited to those colors or models.
