No. In the June 2026 TOP500 edition, Japan’s Fugaku ranked ninth on the HPL list, with a measured result of 442.01 petaflops. The same edition ranked LineShine first at 2,198.40 petaflops. Rankings depend on the benchmark: Fugaku placed third on the separate HPCG list. TOP500’s June 2026 results therefore do not support the claim that Fugaku currently retains the world’s-fastest title.
What “fastest supercomputer” means
There is no single performance ranking that captures every kind of computing workload. TOP500’s HPL ranking and its separate HPCG ranking use different benchmarks, so a system’s position on one should not be treated as its position on the other.
For a clear comparison, name the ranking and edition. In the June 2026 edition, Fugaku was ninth on HPL and third on HPCG; those are distinct standings, not conflicting reports.
Fugaku’s June 2026 rankings
| Ranking and edition | Fugaku’s position | Reported performance | Leader |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOP500 HPL, June 2026 | 9th | 442.01 petaflops | LineShine, 2,198.40 petaflops |
| TOP500 HPCG, June 2026 | 3rd | 16.00 petaflops | Not stated in the cited TOP500 June 2026 entry for Fugaku |
These figures are edition-specific results reported by TOP500’s June 2026 rankings. The HPCG result describes Fugaku’s standing on that benchmark, not an alternative HPL score.

What Fugaku is and where it operates
Fugaku is a research supercomputer installed at RIKEN’s Center for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan. TOP500 lists 7,630,848 cores, Fujitsu A64FX 48-core processors running at 2.2 GHz, and Tofu Interconnect D. RIKEN’s system overview lists 158,976 nodes and 4.85 PiB of total memory. The system details are available from TOP500’s Fugaku system page and RIKEN’s Fugaku overview.
Why Fugaku was once called the world’s fastest
The original title reflects an earlier period. On November 17, 2020, RIKEN announced Fugaku’s top position on major rankings including TOP500, HPCG, HPL-AI, and Graph500, reporting a TOP500 HPL result of 442.01 petaflops. RIKEN said on November 16, 2021, that Fugaku had retained the top position across four rankings for a fourth consecutive term. Those announcements document its historical leadership, not its current TOP500 position: RIKEN’s 2020 announcement and RIKEN’s 2021 announcement.
