Intel and Xerox announced the MXP5800 and MXP5400 on September 10, 2003: programmable processors built for document-imaging equipment such as copiers, scanners, printers and multifunction devices. The MXP5800 had eight compute engines and the MXP5400 had four. They were embedded imaging processors, not consumer PC CPUs.
What Intel and Xerox announced
The launch joined Intel’s programmable processor design with Xerox’s document-imaging expertise. Xerox helped map imaging algorithms onto the processor design, with the aim of giving equipment makers a programmable platform for imaging products. Xerox Innovation Group president and CTO Hervé Gallaire called the collaboration an example of “open innovation efforts that are becoming more common in today’s marketplace.” (Intel’s September 10, 2003 announcement)
Intel CEO Paul Otellini later described the launch hardware at a September 16, 2003 keynote: “This product is a developer board with the first silicon of that product on it.” (Intel’s September 16, 2003 keynote)
How the MXP5800 and MXP5400 differed
| Processor | Compute engines | Positioning in Intel’s 2003 announcement | Announced unit price |
|---|---|---|---|
| MXP5800 | 8 | Higher-performance option in a range aimed at different product price and performance needs | $68 each in quantities of 10,000, as announced in 2003 |
| MXP5400 | 4 | Lower-engine-count option in the same product range | $51 each in quantities of 10,000, as announced in 2003 |
Intel also said manufacturers could combine multiple processors for higher performance. The announcement did not present either model as a general-purpose desktop or laptop CPU; it targeted embedded document-imaging equipment. (Intel’s announcement)

Why programmability mattered to equipment makers
Intel’s central pitch was flexibility. A programmable processor could let manufacturers add imaging capabilities in software and reuse the same chip design across product lines, rather than developing a separate fixed-function chip for every product variation. Intel contrasted this approach with its stated typical ASIC development time of 12 to 24 months; that figure was Intel’s comparison in 2003, not an independently verified measure of development schedules across the industry.
For developers, Intel announced an MXP5800 development kit priced at $2,995. The kit included the processor, a PCI development card, programming tools, sample code and documentation. These were launch-era prices and terms, not current availability or pricing. (Intel’s announcement)

What happened to the products
Intel later issued a discontinuance notice for both processors. It listed December 31, 2007, as the last order date and December 31, 2008, as the last shipment date, citing limited supply and inventory-dependent orders. Those milestones establish that Intel discontinued the products; they do not establish whether any reseller still has remaining stock. (Intel product discontinuance notice)
Accordingly, the MXP5800 and MXP5400 are best understood as a historical Intel–Xerox embedded-imaging collaboration. The 2003 announcement’s prices and plans should not be treated as current purchasing guidance, and the available discontinuance notice does not verify present-day inventory.
