The launch was presented as part of the company’s Asia expansion and a response to global customer demand. Rackspace’s later facility pages describe Hong Kong sites HKG1 and HKG5, but their listed specifications are not evidence of what the facility had when it opened.
When did Rackspace open its Hong Kong data center?
Invest Hong Kong announced the launch of Rackspace’s Asia headquarters and Hong Kong data center on September 8, 2008. Rackspace’s SEC filing independently records the opening on that date. The government announcement said the Hong Kong site was in addition to four Rackspace data centers in the United States and three in the United Kingdom at the time; those counts describe the company’s 2008 footprint, not its present one. Invest Hong Kong’s announcement and the 2008 SEC filing document the launch.
Why did Rackspace expand into Hong Kong?
Rackspace framed the move as a way to serve global customers and expand in Asia. Jim Fagan, then Rackspace vice president and managing director for Asia Pacific, said, “Asia represents a significant growth opportunity for Rackspace, especially in the financial services area.”
Invest Hong Kong’s announcement welcomed the investment and cited Hong Kong’s legal, telecommunications, information-technology, and power infrastructure. These are the reasons described by the parties at the time; the announcement does not quantify the investment or identify Hong Kong-specific customer or revenue figures.

- Managed hosting and cloud hosting
- Platform hosting and virtualization
- Security services
- Storage and backup
- Professional services
The announcement does not establish the Hong Kong site’s launch capacity, exact address, construction or lease cost, or a facility-specific service configuration.

What do Rackspace’s Hong Kong facility pages say now?
Rackspace currently publishes separate pages for HKG1 and HKG5. These pages provide facility context, but no effective date for each specification and no evidence that the listed details applied at the 2008 opening.
HKG5: Tsueng Kwan O
Rackspace’s HKG5 facility page identifies the site as being in Tsueng Kwan O. It lists colocation, network security, dedicated servers, RackConnect Global, private and public cloud, and managed storage and backup. The page gives 917 square metres of dedicated data-center space, 13.5 MW of total utility power, and 7.2 MW of UPS power capacity. It also describes 24x7x365 staffing, biometric scanners, video surveillance, key-card access, multiple Tier-1 providers, seven fiber carriers, and redundant network equipment. These are claims on the current facility page, not launch-day figures.

HKG2 is a separate network location
Rackspace documentation lists HKG2 as an edge location at Equinix HK3 in Tsuen Wan for RackConnect Global. It is a distinct documented network location, not evidence that HKG2 was the Hong Kong data center announced in 2008. See the RackConnect Global FAQ.

What happened after the 2008 opening?
On March 26, 2014, Invest Hong Kong announced that Rackspace had launched ObjectRocket MongoDB Database-as-a-Service in Hong Kong. The release said the service was intended to help customers in Hong Kong and across Asia scale and manage cloud data workloads. This was a later service milestone, not a specification of the 2008 facility. Read Invest Hong Kong’s 2014 announcement.
What the historical record does—and does not—show
Rackspace reported company-wide 2008 net revenue of $531.9 million and net income of $21.7 million in its SEC-filed annual report. Those figures apply to Rackspace Hosting, Inc. as a whole; they are not Hong Kong facility revenue, investment, or operating results. The filing’s 2008 results do not break those figures out for Hong Kong.
The 2008 announcement and filing establish the opening date and the broad corporate context, but do not give the original site’s precise address, capacity, project cost, or Hong Kong-specific business results. Current HKG1 and HKG5 pages should be read as descriptions of those separately identified facilities, not as a retrospective account of the 2008 launch.
