A November 2016 report said Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology would recall about 10,000 targeted surveillance cameras sold in the United States after compromised webcams and other devices were used in a DDoS attack on Dyn’s DNS infrastructure. The report did not identify the exact affected products. Separately, NIST announced CyberSeek, a tool for exploring cybersecurity jobs and career pathways; it was not presented as a response to the attack.

Why were webcams recalled after the Dyn cyberattack?

A November 9, 2016, article by Allison Francis at Data Center Knowledge, originally published by The VAR Guy, reported that Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology would recall approximately 10,000 targeted surveillance cameras sold in the United States. The article placed the recall in the aftermath of a DDoS attack on Dyn’s DNS infrastructure and said compromised webcams and other devices were among those used in the broader attack.

The report also discussed default-password concerns affecting some older products. That is not evidence that every webcam was vulnerable, nor does it establish that a particular model was involved. The account is a contemporary secondary report, not an authoritative recall notice.

Which webcams were recalled?

The 2016 article said the initial focus was on cameras made in 2014 and used for personal room or shop monitoring. It also said the precise affected products or components were unclear. It does not provide a reliable model list, and the available reporting does not establish the recall’s present status. Readers should not treat “about 10,000” or the 2014 description as a verified inventory of affected devices.

What was CyberSeek when NIST announced it?

NIST announced CyberSeek on November 1, 2016, as an interactive resource to help people find cybersecurity job opportunities and help employers understand the availability of skilled workers. The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), led by NIST, funded the project; CompTIA and Burning Glass Technologies created the tool. The announcement was separate from the Dyn incident and camera recall.

How can people use CyberSeek now?

CyberSeek’s current site presents a workforce map, a career-pathway dashboard, and an education and training providers map. The workforce map helps users explore labor-market information geographically; the pathway dashboard organizes roles and career progression; and the provider map helps locate education and training options. The site identifies Lightcast, CompTIA, and NICE as project partners and describes its methodology and data sources.

Use the live site for current exploration, and check the reporting period shown with any metric before applying it to a decision. CyberSeek labels a hiring period of May 2024–April 2025 and a heatmap period of September 2023–August 2024. Those periods are not interchangeable, and figures from one should not be read as timeless counts or forecasts.

How should the 2016 CyberSeek numbers be read?

NIST’s original announcement cited Burning Glass Technologies for its Information Security Analyst figures and gave several other launch-era examples. These numbers describe the announcement in 2016, not today’s workforce:

Launch-era example What NIST reported in 2016
Information Security Analyst positions and employed workers 128,000 positions and 88,000 employed workers, a reported shortfall of 40,000.
Jobs requesting cloud-security skills Average time open of 96 days.
Kansas City metropolitan area 2,134 job openings and 6,829 employed workers.

These are dated examples from the launch announcement, not a current CyberSeek snapshot. For present-day job-market exploration, consult CyberSeek’s live metrics and their stated periods rather than carrying forward the 2016 values.
