Azure cold storage means choosing a lower-cost Blob Storage tier for data you expect to access less often. Today, Azure offers Hot, Cool and Cold as online tiers; Archive is offline and requires rehydration before data can be read. The right choice depends on access frequency, retrieval speed, and minimum-retention charges—not storage price alone.
What “cold storage” meant in the 2016 Azure launch
A May 2, 2016 report described Microsoft’s Cool Blob Storage as a lower-cost option for data accessed infrequently. At launch, Data Center Knowledge reported storage prices of $0.01–$0.048 per GB per month for Cool and $0.0223–$0.061 per GB per month for Hot, varying by region and total storage volume. The report also stated availability of 99% for Cool and 99.9% for Hot; in its RA-GRS example, it gave 99.9% for Cool and 99.99% for Hot. Those are historical figures, not current prices or service guarantees. Data Center Knowledge’s 2016 report.
How Azure’s current Blob Storage tiers differ
Microsoft now distinguishes four tiers. Hot, Cool and Cold are online, so stored data remains available without Archive-style rehydration. Archive is offline. Microsoft Learn lists 99.9% availability for Hot and 99% for Cool and Cold; check the specific service and redundancy terms applicable to your account before relying on those figures. Microsoft’s tier overview.
| Tier | Best fit | Access and retention considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Hot | Data accessed frequently | Online. No minimum retention duration stated in the cited tier overview. |
| Cool | Infrequently accessed data that still needs online access | Online; 30-day minimum retention for general-purpose v2 accounts. |
| Cold | Rarely accessed data that still needs fast online retrieval | Online; 90-day minimum retention for general-purpose v2 accounts. |
| Archive | Rarely accessed data when hours of retrieval latency are acceptable | Offline; 180-day minimum retention for general-purpose v2 accounts. Rehydrate before reading or modifying. |
Microsoft’s minimum-retention durations are subject to account-type qualifications. Moving or deleting data before a tier’s minimum period ends can trigger an early-deletion charge; use the documentation for the account type and operation you plan to use.

Choose a tier by balancing access, latency and retention
- Choose Hot when reads are frequent enough that the higher storage rate of cooler tiers would be offset by retrieval and transaction costs.
- Choose Cool for infrequent access when the data should remain online and a 30-day minimum retention period fits.
- Choose Cold when access is rare but still needs to be fast and online, and the 90-day minimum retention period is acceptable.
- Choose Archive only when data can stay offline until needed, retrieval may take hours, and the 180-day minimum retention period suits its lifecycle.
Rates depend on deployment details such as region, redundancy and usage. Consult Azure’s current Blob Storage pricing for your configuration rather than applying the 2016 launch ranges to a present-day estimate. Compare storage charges with read and write transactions, data retrieval and any early-deletion exposure.
What to expect from Archive rehydration
Archived blobs cannot be read or modified while they remain in Archive. To work with the data, rehydrate it to an online tier. Microsoft says rehydration can take up to 15 hours, depending on priority; a faster priority can affect the operation’s cost. Changing tiers or deleting data before the 180-day Archive minimum has elapsed may incur a prorated charge. See Microsoft’s guidance on rehydrating archived blobs.

Automate tier changes carefully
Azure Blob Storage lifecycle management can transition blobs based on policy conditions, including age or access-related conditions. Policies can help align storage with changing data needs, but they do not guarantee savings: frequent reads, retrieval, transactions and early deletion can outweigh lower storage rates. Model those costs against actual usage before applying a policy, then check that its conditions and timing match how applications and people access the data. Microsoft documents policy behavior and examples in its lifecycle management overview.
