To change your default browser in Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Default apps, select the browser you want, then choose Set default if Windows offers it. If a particular link or file still opens elsewhere, check that browser’s listed associations: the button may not cover every type, and availability can vary by region and Windows rollout.
Calling the process “user-hostile” is a criticism, not an established fact about Microsoft’s intent. Microsoft says routing default changes through Windows helps prevent apps from changing them without your awareness; that security rationale does not by itself make the process convenient.
Change the default browser in Windows 11
You need access to Windows Settings and an installed browser. No extra hardware or paid utility is required.
- Open Settings. Select Start > Settings, or search Windows for Default apps.
- Open the defaults page. In Settings, select Apps > Default apps.
- Select your browser. Search for its name on the Default apps page, then open its app entry.
- Apply the default. Select Set default if the button appears.
- Check individual associations if needed. Review the file types and link types shown for the browser. If a type you care about is assigned elsewhere, select it and choose the preferred browser where Windows offers that option.
These are Microsoft’s documented user-facing steps. The exact options depend on the browser’s registered associations and the Windows build. Microsoft’s Windows support instructions explain how to inspect and assign the types an app can open.

Why a link may still open in another browser
Setting a default browser does not guarantee that every Windows surface or every app will use it. Windows exposes defaults by file type and link type, and the browser must register for the associations it can handle. If only some links behave differently, return to Settings > Apps > Default apps, open your selected browser, and inspect the relevant associations rather than repeating the whole setup blindly.
What you see can also depend on your Windows version, region, registered associations, and feature rollout state. If the page does not show the same button or choices described here, use the association list Windows displays for your browser.

What Microsoft says about controlling default apps
Microsoft’s developer documentation says default-app changes must go through system UI to help protect users from malware changing their settings without their awareness. It also describes UCPD.sys, a filter driver that blocks apps from writing default-app data. This explains Microsoft’s stated security rationale; it does not establish that the workflow is simple or that every Windows surface will follow the selected browser. See Microsoft’s documentation on the Windows app defaults platform.
In a March 17, 2023 post, the Windows Experience Blog described Microsoft’s position: “We want to ensure that people are in control of what gets pinned to their Desktop, their Start menu and their Taskbar as well as to be able to control their default applications such as their default browser through consistent, clear and trustworthy Windows provided system dialogs and settings.” The post also said Microsoft would provide a common supported way for developers to offer default-setting and pinning actions. Those statements describe the company’s position at that time, not a guarantee that every later build presents identical screens.

EEA-specific change documented in 2025
Microsoft’s Windows Insider Blog described an additional change for the European Economic Area (EEA) in a post dated June 2, 2025, and updated June 26. In the EEA, the Settings Set default button was to assign additional link and file types when a browser registers for them. Microsoft tied availability to Edge version 137.0.3296.52, released May 29, 2025. These details are EEA-specific and dated; they should not be assumed to apply elsewhere or to every rollout.
The same post noted a configuration issue affecting default-browser changes originally described in a Beta Channel release. It also said Microsoft had paused the rollout of an updated Bing app behavior after finding a Windows Search bug. Those rollout notes are another reason not to assume that one region’s or one build’s behavior describes every Windows 11 PC. The dated details are in Microsoft’s Windows Insider update on changes for the Digital Markets Act.

Should you change defaults outside Settings?
Use Windows Settings for a supported user change. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes system UI as the required route and explains that Windows protects default-app data against apps writing to it. This walkthrough does not recommend registry edits or other unsupported workarounds.
In managed environments, administrators may configure Edge defaults, but that does not mean users are unable to change them. Microsoft’s enterprise guidance says users can still change defaults; see Set Microsoft Edge as the default browser on Windows and macOS.
