Tencent Cloud announced in November 2021 that it planned to offer its internally developed StarLake servers to customers in Southeast Asia. The systems were described as using second-generation AMD EPYC processors and serving business and private-cloud deployments. That announcement does not confirm that StarLake is available today.

What Tencent announced

StarLake was developed first for Tencent’s own cloud services, then positioned for sale to outside customers. The November 2021 announcement described a business-facing offering for Southeast Asia, including private-cloud use. It was a plan to commercialize the platform, not evidence of a continuing product line or current sales.

Data Center Knowledge’s November 29, 2021 report described StarLake as Tencent Cloud’s own server platform, developed in collaboration with AMD. HPCwire’s November 29, 2021 coverage carried announcement-era details.

What the StarLake system was described as

Processor and intended environment

The 2021 coverage identifies second-generation AMD EPYC processors. The system was designed for hyperscale environments, with a proprietary cooling design. The sources do not establish a specific StarLake model number, customer configuration, or detailed bill of materials.

Vendor-reported design and performance claims

Data Center Knowledge reported Tencent’s claim that StarLake covered 98% of Tencent Cloud application scenarios and had 20% fewer components than a typical server. HPCwire carried announcement-era claims of 40–50% lower total cost of ownership and a 20% reduction in hardware failure and downtime. These are claims attributed to Tencent or announcement material; the cited coverage does not provide an independent test method, baseline, or enough detail to treat them as independently verified comparisons.

Poshu Yeung, Tencent Cloud International’s senior vice president, said in the Data Center Knowledge report: “By working hand in hand, we can provide users with the StarLake server with higher performance, reasonable price and lower power.” This is Tencent’s characterization of the collaboration, not an independent assessment.

How the announcement fits Tencent’s AMD server history

StarLake was not Tencent’s first announced use of AMD EPYC. In August 2017, AMD said Tencent planned dual-socket EPYC-based cloud servers by the end of that year, with up to 64 processor cores. That earlier plan provides context for Tencent’s EPYC adoption, but it is separate from the 2021 StarLake commercialization announcement. AMD’s 2017 announcement also quoted Tencent Cloud senior director Sage Zou on the company’s goals for server hardware, not on the later StarLake sales plan.

AMD’s later corporate reporting names a Tencent Cloud Star Ocean Aura Series AC221 using third-generation EPYC processors. That is a distinct server reference and should not be read as an update to StarLake’s second-generation EPYC specification. The report also attributes a 22% increase in air-cooling capacity and an 8% reduction in carbon emissions to that AC221 design, not to StarLake. See AMD’s 2021–22 Corporate Responsibility Report.

AMD’s 2024 annual report says more than 1,000 AMD-powered public-cloud instances were available across several providers, including Tencent. That broad ecosystem figure does not identify StarLake or establish its retail availability.

Is StarLake available now?

The available announcement-era sources establish a plan to offer StarLake in Southeast Asia in 2021. They do not verify current pricing, configurations, sales status, or geographic availability. A business evaluating the platform should confirm those details directly with Tencent Cloud rather than assume the historical announcement describes a current purchasable product.

What to check when evaluating a server platform

The StarLake coverage does not provide independent benchmark results or comparable prices, so it is not enough to rank the platform against alternatives. For a practical evaluation, request documentation specific to the proposed configuration and deployment:

  • Deployment fit: whether the system is intended for hyperscale, private-cloud, or general enterprise use.
  • Processor details: the exact processor generation and configuration offered, rather than relying on the 2021 announcement’s second-generation EPYC description.
  • Availability: current sales status and supported geography.
  • Total cost of ownership: the calculation method, baseline, workload, and time horizon behind any savings claim.
  • Thermal and power design: cooling requirements and power measurements for the configuration under consideration.
  • Reliability evidence: the definitions and measurement period behind any failure or downtime figures, along with independent validation if available.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
