Dell’s descriptions explain intended roles and specifications, but do not provide independent, comparable performance or cost benchmarks across these systems.
What Dell added to the PowerEdge lineup
The models fall into three different groups: single-socket systems for general business and edge workloads, Vera CPU systems announced for AI and HPC-related use, and Intel-based servers that Dell says completed NEBS Level 3 compliance testing. The right comparison therefore starts with workload, facility and configuration—not model number alone.
| Models | Dell’s stated focus | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| PowerEdge R4715 and R5715 | SMB and midmarket IT, including virtualization, databases and analytics, software-defined storage, and edge deployments | Single-socket options |
| PowerEdge R9822 and M9822 | Agentic AI and HPC-related workloads | NVIDIA Vera CPUs; R9822 is air-cooled and M9822 is fully direct-liquid-cooled |
| PowerEdge R470, R670 and R770 | Deployments where NEBS Level 3 compliance testing is relevant | R470 is positioned for single-socket scale-out; R670 and R770 for heavier performance roles |
These are Dell’s positioning statements, not independent findings about which model is fastest, most efficient or least expensive. Dell’s May 2026 product article also covers the R9825, R9815, R9810 and M9825 for enterprise AI and mixed workloads; it is vendor-authored material, not a neutral comparison.
R4715 vs. R5715: single-socket business systems
Dell presents both the R4715 and R5715 as single-socket choices for SMB and midmarket IT. Its stated workloads include virtualization, databases and analytics, software-defined storage, and edge deployments. Those use cases do not by themselves establish that every configuration is suited to every workload; processor, memory, storage, networking and redundancy choices still matter.

What distinguishes the R5715
Dell describes the R5715 as a 2U system supporting up to 288 TB of storage and up to four PCIe Gen5 slots. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not a promise that every build can deliver both ceilings simultaneously or that a standard configuration includes them. Confirm the supported drive, controller, slot and system configuration for the exact SKU.
The supplied Dell material does not establish an equivalent R4715 capacity figure or a configuration-by-configuration head-to-head. If storage density or expansion is decisive, compare the exact build sheets rather than inferring that the R5715 is better for every workload.
R9822 and M9822: Vera CPU systems for AI and HPC-related work
Dell announced the R9822 and M9822 with NVIDIA Vera CPUs on June 1, 2026. Dell describes the R9822 as an expandable, air-cooled 3U system and the M9822 as fully direct-liquid-cooled. The cooling difference has practical consequences: assess rack space, heat rejection, facility cooling infrastructure and deployment requirements before treating either as a drop-in replacement for a conventional air-cooled server.

- Custom configurations available upon request
Dell said both systems would be globally available in September 2026. That was the announcement’s planned timing; it does not confirm current stock or a specific configuration in every region. Check Dell or an authorized supplier for local availability and the configuration being quoted.
Michael Dell, chairman and chief executive officer of Dell Technologies, said: “Together, we’re helping customers turn data into AI fuel and build infrastructure they control, with the security, governance and efficiency they need.” This is Dell’s stated strategic rationale, not an independent assessment of the systems’ performance or efficiency.
R470, R670 and R770: Dell’s NEBS Level 3-tested models
Dell says the Intel-based R470, R670 and R770 completed NEBS Level 3 compliance testing. Within that group, Dell positions the single-socket R470 for scale-out deployments and the dual-socket R670 and R770 for heavier performance roles. The cited product information does not provide a neutral benchmark comparing these systems with one another or with the other PowerEdge additions.

For a deployment with telecom or other facility requirements, confirm the precise tested configuration and the compliance documentation that applies to the hardware being procured. A statement about completed testing should not be treated as proof that every possible configuration or installation meets a buyer’s requirements.

Shortlist by workload and operating environment first, then compare configured systems on equivalent terms. Dell’s announcements describe product roles; they do not provide neutral, like-for-like performance or total-cost comparisons across these model families.
- Define the workload and scale. Identify whether the need is business virtualization, analytics, software-defined storage, edge deployment, AI, HPC-related work or a scale-out deployment. Estimate current and expected compute, memory, storage and network needs.
- Set processor and socket requirements. The R4715 and R5715 are single-socket options; Dell describes the R470 as single-socket and the R670 and R770 as dual-socket. The R9822 and M9822 use NVIDIA Vera CPUs. Match those differences to software licensing, workload parallelism and capacity needs.
- Check physical fit and cooling. Compare rack height, airflow, power and facility limits. In particular, the M9822’s direct-liquid cooling calls for confirmation that the site can support the required cooling approach.
- Compare the exact memory, storage and I/O configuration. Treat the R5715’s stated ceilings—up to 288 TB of storage and up to four PCIe Gen5 slots—as configuration-dependent maximums. Ask vendors to specify supported components and any trade-offs in the proposed build.
- Verify management, security and compliance requirements. Map required management and security capabilities to the exact system and configuration. Where NEBS Level 3 matters, request documentation applicable to the hardware and deployment under consideration.
- Confirm regional availability and compare configured cost. Check local availability, delivery timing, support and warranty terms. Request comparable, configuration-specific measurements and quotes; the cited Dell materials do not establish independent performance rankings or relative costs.
What the announcements establish—and what they do not
Dell’s product pages and announcements are useful for identifying the systems it announced, their stated configurations and intended roles. They do not establish current inventory in every geography, independently verified workload suitability, head-to-head performance, or comparative operating and purchase costs. Treat performance, efficiency and workload claims as Dell’s claims unless supported by testing relevant to your own configuration and conditions.
