The more accurate story is how that acquisition brought a major South Wales campus into Vantage’s platform—and how Vantage later reported expanding amid a sector-wide race for power-ready capacity.
Vantage’s acquisition ended the Vantage–NGD rivalry
Vantage announced that it had closed its acquisition of UK-based NGD on July 27, 2020, buying the company from InfraVia and NGD’s two founders. The transaction terms were not disclosed. NGD’s South Wales campus became part of Vantage’s portfolio, and the NGD team joined Vantage Europe. Former NGD CEO Justin Jenkins became COO of Vantage Europe and president of Vantage UK. Vantage’s acquisition announcement described Cardiff as its sixth European market.
The campus had 180 MW of total capacity in the announcement: 72 MW in an existing facility and 108 MW of expansion capacity. Vantage called it Europe’s largest data-center campus at the time. Those figures describe the campus at acquisition; they should not be read as 180 MW of newly built Vantage capacity.
What Vantage reported after the deal
In January 2025, Vantage reported more than $13 billion in new debt and equity investment during 2024 and said 11 data centers opened that year. At year-end, it reported more than 2.6 GW of planned and existing capacity across 35 campuses, 14 countries, and 21 markets. The company’s totals span five continents. These are company-reported figures, and the capacity total includes planned sites as well as existing ones; it is not a figure for operational capacity alone. Vantage’s 2024 results announcement provides the company’s account.
#1 Best Overall
- Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
- Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
- Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
That record supports a story of expansion, but not a clean scorecard against NGD as a separate operator. NGD had become part of Vantage years earlier, and the published figures do not separate how much later capacity came from acquired assets versus organic development.
Why announced capacity does not equal usable capacity
A data center’s headline megawatts do not tell a reader whether customers can use that capacity today. An existing facility, a building under construction, and a planned campus represent different stages of delivery. Pre-leasing also matters: a project may be commercially committed before it is available to new customers.

- Save valuable floor space: 12U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 24.25" H x21.65" W x17.72" D. MAXIMUM MOUNTING DEPTH is 14.2".

- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
- Operational capacity is in service, though actual availability depends on the operator and customer commitments.
- Under-construction capacity is being built but is not yet delivered.
- Planned capacity is announced or in development, and may still face construction and infrastructure hurdles.
- Pre-leased capacity has customer commitments, so it should not be treated as open inventory.
Power is a particularly important constraint. CBRE reported 7,481 MW under construction across eight primary North American markets in the first half of 2026, up 24.8% from the comparable prior period. More than 80% of that capacity was preleased, and less than 1,500 MW was available for pre-leasing. CBRE also said power constraints were extending completion timelines. These are North American market figures, not Vantage-specific totals or a measure of conditions in Wales. CBRE’s H1 2026 data-center trends gives the market context.
Nevada shows the scale of Vantage’s AI-era ambitions
On July 15, 2025, Vantage announced its entry into Nevada with a planned 224 MW campus and nearly $3 billion of investment. The company said the first two buildings were fully leased and scheduled the first building to open in the second quarter of 2026. It described support for traditional air-cooled workloads and GPU deployments using liquid cooling, with N+1 electrical redundancy and N+2 mechanical redundancy. These are project details and a timetable from the announcement, not confirmation that the campus or first building subsequently opened. Vantage’s Nevada announcement sets out the plans.

The project illustrates why the data-center race is about more than adding campus announcements. High-density AI workloads need suitable cooling and dependable power infrastructure, while delivery depends on construction and grid readiness. Vantage’s announced specifications signal the design target; they do not, on their own, establish the project’s operating performance or present-day availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the “outpaced” claim
“Outpaced NGD” works as a headline metaphor only if it does not imply that Vantage and NGD remained independent competitors. The acquisition consolidated NGD into Vantage’s platform. Vantage’s later company-reported footprint demonstrates substantial expansion, but the available figures use different dates and mix existing and planned capacity. Meanwhile, CBRE’s North American figures show that even a large construction pipeline can coexist with limited capacity available to lease.
For a fair comparison of data-center operators, match the reporting date and geography, distinguish operational from planned capacity, and separate acquired assets from sites developed by the operator. Campus counts, investment totals, land area, and power capacity measure different things; none alone proves who has delivered the most usable capacity.
