Renesas bought Steradian to add 4D imaging-radar technology and expertise to its automotive driver-assistance portfolio. The deal brought radar together with Renesas’ existing processing, power-management, timing and software capabilities; a first product milestone was the RAA270205, a 4×4-channel automotive radar transceiver announced in November 2022.
What happened in the acquisition?
On August 31, 2022, Renesas announced a definitive agreement to acquire Steradian Semiconductors Private Limited in an all-cash transaction. Steradian was a Bengaluru-based fabless semiconductor company focused on 4D imaging-radar solutions. Renesas announced the acquisition’s completion on October 17, 2022, making Steradian a wholly owned subsidiary. Renesas’ announcement and its completion notice set out the deal chronology and strategic rationale.
What the reported consideration includes
Renesas Electronics Corporation’s 2022 financial report records total acquisition consideration of ¥7,021 million: ¥4,971 million in cash, ¥843 million as the fair value of equity held immediately before the acquisition, and ¥1,207 million in contingent consideration. These are the report’s components of the total, rather than a statement that the entire amount was paid in cash at closing. Renesas Electronics Corporation 2022 financial report.
Why did Renesas want Steradian?
The acquisition was a capability addition, not a move into consumer electronics. Steradian brought 4D imaging-radar technology and engineering expertise that Renesas could combine with its own ADAS system-on-chips (SoCs), power-management ICs, timing products and object-recognition software. Renesas’ stated aim was to simplify automotive-radar system design and help customers develop systems faster.

- Long Range Detection – Next generation updateable IVT Filter and advanced anti-falsing circuitry intelligently reduces false alerts from blind spot monitoring systems and other vehicle avoidance systems.
- Early Warnings – Digital Signal Processing provides faster processing for all incoming laser gun signals and rapidly provides accurate alerts, making you aware of a threat before it is right in front of you.
- Everything You Need - The Cobra RAD 480i radar detector comes with a 12V vehicle power cord, suction cup car windshield mount, and a hook and loop fastener for dash mounting, for wherever the road takes you.
Radar complements cameras and LiDAR in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). It can detect objects at long distances in daylight, darkness and adverse weather, while a camera supplies visual detail and LiDAR contributes distance measurements. Combining sensor inputs helps an ADAS system build a more complete picture of its surroundings.
When announcing the deal, Renesas cited a December 2021 Strategy Analytics report, “Imaging RADAR Coming to Automotive,” which forecast that the number of radar sensors installed in vehicles would triple over the following five years. That was a third-party forecast quoted by Renesas, not a measurement or forecast produced by Renesas itself. Renesas president and CEO Hidetoshi Shibata described radar as “an indispensable technology for ADAS, which uses a complex combination of various sensors.” The acquisition announcement.

What does Steradian’s 4D imaging radar add?
In Renesas’ description, 4D imaging radar is intended to deliver accurate object recognition in a compact, power-efficient chip. The acquisition added radar capability to a broader set of components and software, giving Renesas a way to offer more of the pieces used in an automotive radar system rather than radar technology in isolation.
Steradian CEO Gireesh Rajendran said the joint work would continue to develop radar solutions with the “high performance, small footprint and low power consumption” customers wanted. Those were stated goals; the acquisition announcement does not provide independent performance measurements for the technology. Renesas’ acquisition announcement.

- Fewer False Alerts with Cobra's Patented Technology: The IVT Filter TM system reduces false alerts from sources like collision avoidance systems so you hear only what you need to, and nothing else.
- Detects Signals From Both Front & Rear: With Cobra’s advanced laser eye sensor, you are protected from police scanning in front or behind you. Detects all radar signals (X, K and Ka bands with signal strength indication), laser and VG-2 signals
- Audible Signal Strength Levels: Unique tones provide signal strength and band identification so you can keep your eyes on the road and still identify what type of alert is detected.
- 7-Segment Color Display: High quality display features band identification icons and numeric signal strength meter for an accurate and informed drive
- Instant-On Ready: Quickly detects radar guns so you have fast speed monitoring capabilities ready to go at all times
What is the RAA270205?
The RAA270205 is a Renesas automotive radar transceiver announced on November 16, 2022, using Steradian technology. It has 4×4 channels and operates in the 76–81 GHz automotive radar band. Renesas positioned the device for demanding ADAS and Level 3+ applications and described it as part of a wider sensor-fusion portfolio. Its announcement is the clearest product milestone showing how the acquisition fed into Renesas’ roadmap; the announcement alone does not establish production timing or vehicle deployment. Renesas also identified potential industrial applications, including surveillance, traffic monitoring of people, cars and motorcycles, and human-machine interfaces such as gesture recognition. Separately, Visteon announced a joint-development agreement under which Steradian would provide 4D image-radar hardware and perception-software technology for ADAS-focused development. That agreement shows Steradian was also working with an automotive ecosystem partner; it does not change the fact that Renesas completed the acquisition in October 2022.
