Bollinger’s proposed B1 SUV and B2 pickup illustrated how a purpose-built electric platform can create cargo routes and work features that are difficult to package in a conventional combustion-engine vehicle. Their unusual design was the point; the consumer vehicles did not reach production on the schedule originally reported. Bollinger later shifted its focus to commercial electric trucks.
Why purpose-built EVs can be packaged differently
Many early electric vehicles adapted platforms designed for gasoline engines. That left designers working around the original engine bay, radiator, and transmission tunnel while also finding room for a large battery pack. A clean-sheet electric vehicle can arrange those components differently: a skateboard-style platform places the battery below the floor, leaving more freedom to shape the space above it.
That freedom does not automatically make every EV more useful, but it allows designers to reconsider where cargo can go and how a vehicle can serve as a work tool. Bollinger’s B1 and B2 were striking examples of that design argument.
How the B1 and B2 opened new cargo routes
A front opening and a path through the vehicle
The proposed vehicles paired a front “Frunkgate” with a lengthwise “Passthrough.” The arrangement was intended to let long objects travel through the vehicle rather than forcing owners to leave a tailgate open or rely on a roof rack. IEEE Spectrum reported in 2020 that the B2 could accommodate cargo up to 4.9 meters long and the B1 up to 4 meters.

The Frunkgate was also described as a fold-down work surface, while a 244-liter front storage compartment was intended to hold tools. The article said onboard outlets, supplied through an inverter, could provide power at a worksite. Those are design and specification claims reported for the proposed vehicles, not current product specifications.
Designed for work and rough terrain
The concept extended beyond cargo access. IEEE Spectrum’s 2020 feature described all-wheel drive, removable body panels, portal axles, ground clearance, water-wading ability, and a substantial payload as parts of the B1/B2 work-and-off-road proposition. It also reported claimed figures of 614 horsepower, 668 pound-feet of torque, a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds, a 120-kilowatt-hour battery, and payload capacity of 2.3 metric tons. These figures were reported at the time, not independently verified current specifications or results from a comparative test.

What the reported plans and figures meant at the time
IEEE Spectrum’s 2020 feature described a planned price of US$125,000 and a company plan to build 1,000 B1 and B2 vehicles in 2021. Those were article-era plans, not a current price, offer, or production commitment. The practical lesson in the design was less about a particular performance number than about the space freed up when a vehicle is conceived around electric propulsion from the start.
What happened to the consumer B1 and B2
In 2021, Bollinger Motors said it was postponing B1/B2 development and focusing on commercial trucks and fleets. The company said it would refund reservations while it worked toward a more definitive timeline for resuming the program. The consumer B1 and B2 should therefore be understood as postponed vehicles, not models currently available to order.

A company release dated September 23, 2024, says Bollinger pivoted in 2022 to develop the B4 Class 4 commercial truck and reached production of its first customer-ready B4 in September 2024. A 2025 company update filed with the SEC discusses commercial-vehicle activity, including the B4 and Urban Delivery, but does not establish that B1/B2 consumer production resumed.

The B1 and B2 showed how a purpose-built EV layout could turn packaging into a user-facing feature: long cargo could pass through the vehicle, front storage could double as a work area, and the truck’s structure could be shaped around utility rather than inherited from an engine-powered platform. Their story also separates a compelling design proposal from a production vehicle. Bollinger’s later commercial focus changed the status of the consumer models, but not the underlying point about the design possibilities of electric platforms.
