At Black Hat USA 2013, Georgia Tech researchers demonstrated Mactans, a proof-of-concept malicious charger that used USB to install an app on then-current iPhones without a jailbreak or user interaction. The demonstration showed how a charger could also act as a computer—not that ordinary chargers or current iPhones are vulnerable to the same attack.
What the researchers demonstrated
Researchers Billy Lau, Yeongjin Jang, and Chengyu Song presented “Mactans: Injecting Malware into iOS Devices via Malicious Chargers” at Black Hat USA 2013. Mactans was a deliberately built proof of concept, not a standard Apple charger. It combined a USB power connection with computing hardware and software able to communicate with an iOS device.
The researchers built it using a BeagleBoard, a small computer running Linux. The key was that a USB connection could carry data as well as power. They reported exploiting weaknesses in the iOS security model at the time to install an app through that connection, without jailbreaking the target or requiring its user to interact. The conference archive and paper describe the historical demonstration: Black Hat USA 2013 archive and Mactans paper.
What “within one minute” means
The Black Hat abstract said a device could be compromised “within one minute” of being plugged into Mactans. That is the researchers’ description of their 2013 demonstration timing. It is not a population-wide attack rate, a guarantee that every attempt succeeded, or a benchmark for today’s phones. The cited materials do not establish that Mactans works against current iPhones or iOS releases.

What this does—and does not—mean for iPhone owners
The practical security lesson is about untrusted USB connections: a port used for charging may also expose a data connection, and a malicious device can use computing hardware to exploit that path. Mactans does not show that every charger is dangerous, nor does the historical proof of concept establish present-day vulnerability. NIST lists malicious charging stations as a physical-access threat and advises users to avoid public charging stations that may house malicious chargers.
NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue gives this specific advice: “Do not accept any prompt to trust an untrusted or public USB charger.” If an unfamiliar USB connection prompts you to trust a connected device, decline it. NIST’s guidance is available in its “Malicious Charging Station” entry.

Safer ways to charge away from home
- Prefer a power source you control. Use your own wall adapter and a power outlet where practical rather than an unfamiliar public USB charging station.
- If you must use USB, limit the data path. A power-only cable or USB data blocker can prevent data connections while allowing charging, but it is a precaution—not a complete security guarantee. The cited sources do not test particular accessories.
- Decline unexpected trust prompts. Do not approve a prompt to trust an untrusted or public USB device.
