For most Windows users, Lively Wallpaper is the best free live wallpaper app. It is open source, supports Windows 10 and 11, and can use videos, GIFs, web pages, shaders, and interactive projects as backgrounds. Choose Wallpaper Engine instead if you want a large Steam Workshop catalog and a more advanced wallpaper editor; it is a paid app. If you only want changing still images, Windows 11 Themes or Bing Wallpaper is simpler.

Why Lively is the best free choice for most PCs
Lively Wallpaper is a free, open-source application for Windows 10 and 11. Its download page lists Windows 10/11 version 1903 or later, a GPL-3.0 license, an approximate download size of 208 MB, and a 2 GB minimum RAM requirement. Treat the RAM figure as the project’s stated minimum, not a guarantee that every wallpaper will run smoothly on a PC with that amount of memory. What you can use as a Lively wallpaper
Lively’s documented inputs include MP4, WebM, AVI, MOV, and MKV video; GIF, APNG, and WebP animation; HTML5 pages using CSS and JavaScript; GLSL and Shadertoy shaders; and Unity or Godot projects. That range makes it useful both for setting a video you already have and for running more interactive desktop scenes. A particular file or project may still depend on its codec, runtime, or hardware.
How it handles multiple monitors and performance
You can set wallpapers per display, span one across displays, or use a grid layout. Lively also offers playback and volume controls, optional screensaver mode, and automatic pause behavior when it detects fullscreen apps or games. Pausing can reduce the wallpaper’s CPU and GPU use while you play or watch fullscreen content; it does not mean every wallpaper has the same resource cost.

When Wallpaper Engine is worth paying for
Wallpaper Engine is the stronger fit if finding ready-made backgrounds is more important than using a free app. It integrates with Steam Workshop for subscriptions and offers creation tools for images, videos, websites, applications, presets, and effects. A 2026 comparison reports more than one million free Workshop wallpapers; that is a reported catalog figure, not a promise that every item is current, suitable for every display, or available outside Steam.
Wallpaper Engine is a paid Steam application, while Lively is free and open source. Pricing can change, so check the Steam listing before buying. The comparison source lists Windows 10/11 support and DirectX 11 along with CPU, memory, graphics, and storage requirements; verify the current Steam requirements against your system before installation.

How to set up a live wallpaper without unnecessary strain
- Install Lively from an official channel. Use the project’s official site, its Microsoft Store listing, or its official GitHub releases. Avoid repackaged download sites. Enable Start with Windows only if you want the app to launch automatically after sign-in.
- Test one lightweight file on one display. Start with a short, modest-resolution MP4 or GIF and assign it to a single monitor. Confirm playback works before setting up a span or per-display arrangement.
- Set pause and battery behavior. Enable fullscreen pause, and configure Lively’s battery behavior on a laptop so playback can stop or pause when power conservation matters.
- Add displays or richer content gradually. Once playback is stable, configure per-monitor, span, or grid layouts, or try web and interactive wallpapers. More displays or complex effects can increase resource demands.
Fix blank, choppy, or incompatible wallpapers
- Blank video or no playback: Try another file or codec. A file extension alone does not guarantee that Windows can decode its video stream.
- Stuttering: Test a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate version, then check whether the issue changes. Heavy content and the PC’s hardware affect playback.
- Web wallpaper problems: Web-based wallpapers can depend on the WebView2 runtime. Check that requirement if a web page appears blank or does not behave as expected.
- Laptop battery drain or gaming slowdowns: Use fullscreen pause and battery-saving behavior rather than assuming the wallpaper will always stop on its own.
Do not rely on a live wallpaper or screensaver to prevent OLED burn-in: the available comparison does not establish that either guarantees protection.

Windows 11’s documented personalization options cover static backgrounds and themes, not animated or interactive desktop wallpapers. For daily still-image changes, Windows 11 Themes or Bing Wallpaper avoids the extra application and playback setup. To use a video, GIF, or interactive scene as the desktop background, install a dedicated wallpaper app such as Lively or Wallpaper Engine.
