That West Marches-style structure opens up a wider story, but it also raises the coordination demands: events, relationships, and lore must make sense across groups as well as for viewers following different episodes.
What changed in Critical Role Campaign 4?
Campaign 4 leaves Exandria for Aramán, a setting shaped by dead gods and the aftermath of rebellion. Its story connects people to the execution of war hero Thjazi Fang and asks what happens when the gods are gone: “Without the Gods, what great deeds now fall to us? And who, or what, shall grab their crown for themselves?”
The defining structural change is the shared-world, rotating-table approach. Critical Role describes three distinct perspectives: the valiant Soldiers, the vigorous Seekers, and the veiled Schemers. Rather than centering every episode on one party, the campaign can follow different groups and let their fates intertwine. Critical Role’s official Campaign 4 page describes the format and setting.
What does a West Marches-style campaign mean here?
In this campaign, West Marches-style means that multiple groups of protagonists explore one shared setting, with the tables rotating rather than one fixed party carrying the whole story. The official description establishes three tables; it does not mean that every character appears in every episode or that all tables necessarily meet at once.

- First major D&D adventure book within Critical Role’s world of Exandria, taking players from levels 3–12
- Multi-continental story that spans the scarred Wastes of Xhorhas, introduces the continent of Marquet, and eventually plunges players into the Netherdeep—a terrifying cross between the Far Realm and the deep ocean
- Bursting with lore and all new art depicting Exandria
- Includes a poster map of Ank’Harel
- Adds magic items, creatures, and introduces rival NPCs
The format expands the story’s reach: one group’s choices can shape a world that another group later encounters. Critical Role says the rotating perspectives let the campaign “delve deeper into Aramán” as the characters’ fates intertwine.
Why is the format a challenge for the cast and production?
A single-party campaign can keep one set of relationships, locations, and plot developments in view. With rotating tables sharing a world, those threads multiply. The scale of that workload has not been quantified publicly, so the points below describe the practical coordination the format calls for, not a measured burden.

Continuity across tables
An event at one table may change what another group finds, knows, or can do. The story needs to preserve cause and effect across episodes without assuming every viewer has watched every table.
Tracking characters and relationships
Viewers need to understand who the protagonists are, how separate characters connect, and why those ties matter. The more perspectives a story follows, the more important clear introductions and reminders become.

Keeping lore, rules, and timeline aligned
Rotating groups share the same setting, so their episodes need a coherent sense of what is true in Aramán and when events happen. That calls for coordination across cast and production, even when the groups’ immediate stories differ.
Orienting viewers episode by episode
Some viewers may follow one table more closely than another. Episodes therefore need enough context to make their own developments understandable while still rewarding viewers who recognize connections across the campaign.

How does the rotating-table model compare with a single-party campaign?
| What to compare | Campaign 4’s rotating tables | Conventional single-party structure |
|---|---|---|
| Active protagonists | Three named rotating perspectives: Soldiers, Seekers, and Schemers. | One central party; the number of protagonists depends on the campaign. |
| Continuity burden | Shared-world events and timelines need to connect across tables. | Developments generally remain within one party’s storyline. |
| Episode accessibility | Viewers may need context for groups they follow less closely. | A consistent party can make it easier to carry context from episode to episode. |
| Cross-table payoff | Choices and relationships can gain significance across separate perspectives. | Payoffs typically build through the central party’s shared experience. |
| Narrative scope | Multiple groups can explore more of the shared world from different angles. | The story is usually bounded by the central party’s experience. |
