Parallels announced that it had acquired ModernGigabyte, the company behind ModernBill, on March 27, 2008. The deal brought ModernBill into Parallels’ hosting-automation portfolio, with a stated plan to rename it Parallels Plesk Billing. Today, Plesk says billing is not included with its control panel; it documents integrations with several external billing systems instead.

When did Parallels acquire ModernBill?

Parallels publicly announced the acquisition of ModernGigabyte, LLC, on March 27, 2008. ModernGigabyte, based in Louisville, Kentucky, made ModernBill and other hosting-automation products. HostSearch reported that the purchase had gone through on January 11, 2008; that is a separately reported transaction date, not the public announcement date. DataCenterKnowledge’s 2008 coverage and HostSearch’s account describe the deal and its timing.

What did Parallels acquire?

The announced acquisition covered ModernBill and four other ModernGigabyte products: ModernAuthorize, SSL Factory, ModernDNS, and FraudGuardian. Parallels said it would continue ModernBill development and maintain support through existing channels. The announcement described ModernBill as automated billing software for hosting providers, designed to complement control-panel products. Parallels’ acquisition announcement outlines the products and support commitment.

Why did the acquisition matter to hosting providers?

Parallels was combining hosting control panels with billing and back-office automation for hosting resellers and service providers. The announcement noted ModernBill’s integrations with more than 15 popular control panels and described bundled offerings with Parallels Plesk Control Panel. DataCenterKnowledge reported that ModernGigabyte served nearly 15,000 hosting resellers with more than 2 million customers worldwide at the time. Those figures describe the company’s reported scale in 2008, not its current customer base.

Was ModernBill renamed Plesk Billing?

Parallels announced a plan to rename ModernBill as Parallels Plesk Billing and place it in the Plesk product family, alongside Plesk Control Panel, Plesk Expand, Plesk Plus, and Plesk Sitebuilder. This establishes the intended product transition in 2008; the available sources do not establish a definitive date when ModernBill or Plesk Billing was discontinued.

What billing software works with Plesk now?

Plesk’s current support documentation says billing is not shipped with Plesk. Instead, it lists external systems that integrate with Plesk through API requests:

  • WHMCS
  • HostBill
  • BILLmanager
  • Blesta
  • ClientExec
  • Ubersmith

For current setup details, consult Plesk’s billing integration support article. Parallels’ end-of-life article does not name ModernBill or Parallels Plesk Billing, so its omission does not establish when either product reached end of life. The end-of-life product list should not be treated as proof of a specific retirement date.

How to assess a Plesk billing integration

The documented integrations establish that Plesk connects to separate billing systems; they do not provide a feature-by-feature comparison or establish which is best for a particular host. When evaluating one, compare the work it automates and the operational fit:
