There is no objectively proven “clear winner” among Rufus, Ventoy, and balenaEtcher: the available documentation does not provide controlled tests of speed, reliability, or ease of use. The best choice depends on the job. Use Rufus or Etcher to write one selected image; choose Ventoy when you want one USB drive to hold multiple images and offer a menu at startup.
Which Rufus alternative should you use?
| Your goal | Best-fit option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Write one selected boot image to a USB drive | Rufus or balenaEtcher | Both are documented options for creating Ubuntu installation media; Rufus is designed to create bootable USB drives from images, while Etcher uses an image-select, target-select, flash workflow. Rufus; Canonical’s Ubuntu instructions. |
| Keep several boot images on one drive and choose one at startup | Ventoy | Install Ventoy on the drive, copy image files onto it, then select an image from Ventoy’s boot menu. Ventoy setup guide. |
| Create Ubuntu media on macOS | balenaEtcher or Canonical’s advanced command-line route | Canonical documents Etcher for macOS and also describes dd for advanced users. Using a disk-writing command with the wrong device can destroy data. Canonical’s Ubuntu instructions. |
| Create Ubuntu media on Windows | Rufus, balenaEtcher, or Ventoy | Canonical documents Rufus, lists Etcher for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and lists Ventoy for Windows and Linux. These are the options in that guide, not a claim about every third-party build. Canonical’s Ubuntu instructions. |
These are workflow matches, not test rankings. Rufus remains a current-purpose tool: its official site describes creating bootable USB drives from bootable images, including Windows, Linux, and UEFI media. Rufus.
How do Ventoy, Rufus, and Etcher differ?
Ventoy: a reusable multiboot drive
Ventoy’s defining difference is that you install it on the USB drive once, then copy multiple image files to the drive rather than rewriting it for every image. At startup, choose which image to boot from Ventoy’s menu. The setup guide warns that installing Ventoy formats the selected drive and erases its data. Ventoy setup guide.
Ventoy’s project page reports that “1400+ image files are tested” and that “90%+ distros in distrowatch.com are supported.” These are claims published by the Ventoy project, accessed October 2, 2026—not an independent audit or a comparison with Rufus or Etcher. Ventoy project.

Rufus: write a selected image
Rufus is a fit when you want to create a bootable USB from a particular image. Its official description covers bootable media for Windows, Linux, and UEFI use. It is not obsolete just because Ventoy offers a different, multiboot workflow. Rufus.
balenaEtcher: a straightforward image-writing workflow
Canonical documents Etcher as an option on Windows, macOS, and Linux for creating Ubuntu installation media. Its documented workflow is to select the image, select the target drive, and flash it. This simplicity does not establish that Etcher is faster or more reliable than the alternatives. Canonical’s Ubuntu instructions.

Check image-specific compatibility before choosing
For Ubuntu specifically, Canonical’s guide dated July 14, 2026 warns that Ventoy 1.1.11, released in April 2026, has a known issue that prevents Ubuntu from installing correctly. Canonical recommends using a different Ventoy release or another tool for that case. This warning is specific to the cited Ubuntu guidance and version; it should not be read as a general verdict on Ventoy or every image. Canonical’s Ubuntu instructions.
Prepare the USB drive without losing the wrong data
Any of these workflows can overwrite the selected USB drive. Back up files on it first, identify the correct removable device, and check the tool’s target selection and prompts before proceeding. Canonical explicitly warns that Rufus image writing destroys data on the selected USB; Ventoy warns that installation formats the selected drive and loses its data. Canonical’s Ubuntu instructions; Ventoy setup guide.

The official documentation supports comparing the tools by workflow and documented platform fit. It does not establish a universal winner through controlled speed, usability, boot-success, or reliability testing. For a single image, Rufus and Etcher are sensible choices; for several images on one drive, Ventoy offers the distinct multiboot workflow. Match the tool to your image and operating system, and check current image-specific guidance before writing the drive.
