1Password 8 works on iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. After installing it, enable Apple’s AutoFill integration to use saved logins across apps and websites; Safari also has a browser-specific filling workflow for passwords, payment cards and addresses. You can save and use passkeys in 1Password, with Face ID or Touch ID available when supported by your device and app flow.
Check whether your iPhone or iPad is compatible
As of 1Password’s system requirements published August 18, 2026, the current 1Password 8 app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. The official download page gives the same minimum. If your device cannot run that version, it does not meet the stated requirement for 1Password 8.

Set up 1Password AutoFill
Apple’s AutoFill integration lets 1Password suggest saved credentials in apps and websites. The current iPhone and iPad setting is called AutoFill & Passwords.
- Install 1Password on your iPhone or iPad and complete its setup.
- Open Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords.
- Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys, then select 1Password as a provider.
- If Apple’s Passwords app is also offering to save credentials and you want 1Password to be the only save destination, turn off that provider to avoid duplicate or confusing save prompts.
To fill a login, tap the username or password field in an app or website and choose the suggested Login item. If the right login is not suggested, tap the passwords key icon to search your 1Password items.

Use 1Password in Safari
Safari has a 1Password workflow on iPhone and iPad for filling passwords, credit cards, addresses and other saved information. This is distinct from enabling AutoFill for apps generally: follow 1Password’s Safari setup and filling instructions when your goal is browser-based filling.

Save and use passkeys with 1Password
On a supported 1Password 8 setup, a passkey can be saved in a Login item and selected the next time you sign in. 1Password describes passkeys as credentials that can be used only for one website or app; its apps, including iOS, let you view, manage and share them.
Save a passkey
- Start the website or app’s account-creation process, or open its option to add a passkey.
- When asked to create a passkey, choose Continue.
- Choose whether to create a new Login item or add the passkey to an existing item, then select Save.
Sign in with a saved passkey
Choose the site’s passkey sign-in option and select the Login item you want to use. If the passkey is stored on another device, choose the option to use another device; scan the displayed QR code with the device running 1Password.

What AutoFill makes visible, and what it does not
According to 1Password’s AutoFill security guidance, the integration exposes only usernames and domain names as metadata needed to suggest credentials. This metadata is stored in an encrypted Password AutoFill keychain that other apps cannot access. To fill a credential, you still have to unlock 1Password and choose an item.
Protect your device passcode as well: 1Password warns that someone who knows it may be able to see which apps and websites have logins and the usernames associated with them.

Do you need a hardware security key?
A hardware security key is an accessory option, not a requirement for ordinary 1Password use. 1Password’s requirements notes name the YubiKey 5 NFC, YubiKey 5C NFC and YubiKey 5Ci in its iOS compatibility information. The same page states the broader security-key support baseline as 1Password 7.9 or later and iOS 15 or later, while specifically listing those models for iOS 14. Check that your iPhone or iPad, key connector and intended 1Password setup match the compatibility details before buying or relying on a key.
