The contemporary report put its single-chip throughput at 400 Gbps and described the figure and performance comparisons as Cisco launch-era claims—not independently verified benchmarks.
What was Cisco’s nPower X1?
The nPower X1 was a network processor Cisco positioned for the demands of software-defined networking and its then-current “Internet of Everything” vision. DataCenterKnowledge identified it as a new Cisco processor in its September 13, 2013 report, “Cisco Launches Next Generation Network Processor”. The available account does not include an original Cisco announcement or datasheet, so launch details here are attributed to that report.
The report said packet processing, traffic management, and input/output functions were integrated on the chip. It also described programmable control intended to support on-the-fly reprogramming, rather than a fixed-function approach to every networking task.
What performance did Cisco claim?
DataCenterKnowledge reported that a single nPower X1 chip could deliver 400 Gbps and contained four billion transistors. It also reported Cisco’s comparison with its previous network processors: eight times the throughput and one quarter the power per bit. Those are launch-era claims as reported in 2013; the report does not specify a benchmark method or identify the baseline processor models, and it cites no independent validation.

The article further said the programmable control was designed to handle hundreds of millions of unique transactions per second. This is a stated design capability in the report, not a separately documented test result.
What did programmability mean for network operators?
The intended benefit was the ability to change processor behavior as network requirements evolved. The report described the chip as allowing on-the-fly reprogramming and linked that flexibility to software-defined networking. It did not provide implementation details, supported programming interfaces, or operational examples, so it does not establish how customers would configure or deploy that capability.

Nikhil Jayaram, identified in the report as Cisco’s vice president of engineering, characterized Cisco’s approach this way: “This in turn was fueled by Cisco’s use of internally developed network silicon using advanced ASIC development models ahead of competitors who continued to rely on general purpose CPUs or FPGAs to power their products.” This is Jayaram’s 2013 characterization, not an independently established comparison of competitors.
Did the processor ship, and when was it available?
The report said Cisco planned to feature the nPower X1 in networking innovations on September 24, 2013. That statement does not establish a shipping date, commercial availability, customer deployments, pricing, or product support status. The available source does not provide those details.

How does the nPower X1 compare with current Cisco network silicon?
Cisco’s current Silicon One overview describes a unified network silicon architecture. Its separate G300 datasheet, updated February 10, 2026, specifies 102.4 Tbps of full-duplex switching capacity. These materials provide present-day context, not evidence that the G300 succeeded the nPower X1.
| Measure | nPower X1 (2013 report) | Silicon One G300 (Cisco datasheet, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Reported capacity | 400 Gbps from a single chip, according to DataCenterKnowledge; measurement conditions are not stated. | 102.4 Tbps full-duplex switching capacity, according to Cisco’s G300 datasheet. |
| Integrated functions or role | Packet processing, traffic management, and input/output functions described as integrated on-chip by DataCenterKnowledge. | Product-specific details are in Cisco’s G300 datasheet; a directly comparable list of nPower X1 functions is not established. |
| Programmability | On-the-fly reprogramming and control for hundreds of millions of unique transactions per second were described in the 2013 report. | Not stated in the cited G300 datasheet as a directly comparable measure. |
| Power comparison | Cisco’s reported claim: one quarter the power per bit of previous Cisco network processors; methodology and baseline models are not stated. | Not stated as a directly comparable measure in the cited G300 datasheet. |
The capacities should not be read as a like-for-like performance test: the nPower X1 report gives a single-chip throughput figure, while the G300 datasheet specifies full-duplex switching capacity. The sources do not provide common test conditions or a product lineage between them.
