For a quick view of current traffic, use nload. To see which pairs of hosts are exchanging data, use iftop. For hourly, daily, and monthly usage history, use vnStat. If you need several interfaces visible together, consider bmon.

These tools answer different questions: nload and bmon show interface traffic, iftop breaks current traffic down by host pair, and vnStat reports stored counter history. None of the three primary tools identifies bandwidth use by process.

Which command-line bandwidth monitor should you choose?

Tool What it shows Time horizon Best for Setup or permissions
nload Incoming and outgoing traffic for an interface, with graphs and transfer totals Live Checking how fast a link is moving now Reads interface traffic counters; check your distribution’s package repository for installation
iftop Current bandwidth use by pairs of hosts on a selected interface Live Finding which remote hosts are using bandwidth Packet-capture permissions are generally required; many systems require root
vnStat Stored traffic totals for an interface Historical: hourly, daily, and monthly reporting Reviewing data usage over time Requires a background collector, vnstatd, and time to build a database
bmon Traffic counters from multiple interfaces, with different display modes Primarily live monitoring Comparing interfaces in one terminal view Uses available input methods; installation depends on your distribution

For a single machine, start with the question you need answered: “How fast is this link now?” points to nload; “What is using my bandwidth?” points to iftop; “How much did we use this month?” points to vnStat. Linuxize’s comparison, updated May 28, 2026, documents repository installation for common distributions; package names and service setup can differ, so check your OS repositories. 1. nload: best for a quick live interface view

Debian’s nload man page describes it as “a console application which monitors network traffic and bandwidth usage in real time.” It displays incoming and outgoing traffic as separate graphs and includes transfer totals, making it a straightforward way to see whether an interface is busy and in which direction traffic is flowing.

#1 Best Overall
Network Monitor
  • Show app bandwidth usage
  • Show open sockets
  • Show network data usage statistics

Use nload when you need an at-a-glance live view rather than a breakdown of individual connections or a record of past usage. It reports interface traffic, not which program on the machine created it.

2. iftop: best for seeing which hosts use bandwidth

The iftop man page says it listens to traffic on a named interface and displays current bandwidth use by pairs of hosts. That makes it the better choice when a live total is not enough and you want to identify which host pairs are exchanging traffic.

ALFA Network AWUS036ACS Wide-Coverage Dual-Band AC600 USB Wireless Wi-Fi Adapter w/High-Sensitivity External Antenna - Windows, MacOS & Kali Linux Supported
  • Cutting-Edge, latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology. Dual-Band 2.4GHz(150Mbps) and 5GHz(433Mbps) Performance to prevent network freezing and lags when streaming and gaming online
  • High-Sensitivity Dual-Band external antenna optimizes signal for more coverage
  • Compact design, saving space without blocking other USB peripherals on your laptop/desktop computer
  • Driver support for Windows XP/ Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10, Apple MacOS 10.4 to 10.12 and Linux

iftop observes network traffic; it does not provide a process-by-process view. It also needs packet-capture permissions. On many Linux systems, that means running it with root privileges; the exact permission model depends on how the system is configured.

3. vnStat: best for historical usage and planning

vnStat is the choice for questions about past usage, such as how much traffic an interface handled today or this month. It relies on interface counters and saves samples so its command-line queries can report historical totals.

How vnStat collects data

The vnStat installation documentation distinguishes the query command, vnstat, from the background collector, vnstatd. The daemon retrieves, caches, and stores traffic data; the command reads the resulting database. Because the database is not updated constantly, useful output may not appear immediately after installation. Leave the collector running to build a history before relying on longer-period reports.

Install and enable the collector

On Debian- and Ubuntu-based systems, the documented repository installation pattern is:

When bmon is the better fit

The bmon man page describes bmon as “a portable bandwidth monitor with multiple input methods and output modes.” Choose it when you want several interfaces listed together or need a different display mode. It is an interface-oriented monitor, not a host-pair breakdown like iftop or a historical database like vnStat.

Install the tool that matches your system

Package names and availability vary across distributions and releases. Check the repositories configured for your OS before installing. For example, Linuxize documents sudo apt install bmon for Debian- and Ubuntu-based systems; vnStat installation uses sudo apt install vnstat and also requires its collector service to run. These are not universal commands for every Linux distribution.

nload and bmon are useful for live interface counters, iftop needs packet-capture access to inspect host-pair traffic, and vnStat needs a running collector and a populated database. Choose according to whether you need a live rate, a host-pair view, multiple interfaces, or a usage history.
