The social-bookmarking service lost both its primary user-data store and its backup in a database failure on January 30, 2009. Founder Larry Halff said on February 17 that database-file recovery had failed. Some members reconstructed portions of their bookmarks from external services, but there was no general restoration.
What happened to Ma.gnolia
Ma.gnolia went offline on January 30, 2009, after a database failure. Its website and API became unavailable while the company tried to rebuild the service. Contemporaneous reporting said the failure affected both the primary user-data store and the backup.
The failed MySQL database was reported as nearly half a terabyte. That figure describes the database’s reported size; it is not a count of users or bookmarks.
Why the original data could not be restored
On February 17, Ma.gnolia founder Larry Halff reported that recovery from the database files had been unsuccessful: “Unfortunately, database file recovery has been unsuccessful and I won’t be able to recover members’ bookmarks from the Ma.gnolia database.”

That statement establishes failure of recovery from Ma.gnolia’s own database. It does not prove that every copy of every bookmark disappeared from the internet, nor does it establish a detailed technical root cause. Present-day access to any surviving Ma.gnolia archive or recovery endpoint has not been verified.
Could users recover their bookmarks?
Some users could reconstruct bookmarks from copies held outside Ma.gnolia. The result depended on what each member had connected or published before the outage.

- The design of these planner bands is both functional and fun. The elastic material is stretchy yet durable, allowing them to fit snugly on the pages without causing any damage.
- They are 6.7 inches before they are stretched, they can extend to approx. between 20.32 cm/ 8 inches and 27.94 cm/ 11 inches, appropriate for most sizes of books, not so good on 3x5".
- These elastic bands can be used for more than just books. They work perfectly with planners, notebooks, binders, tablet, calendars, booklet, bible, paperback books, and even as page markers for recipes or important documents. The versatility of this set makes it a must-have for anyone who loves to keep their materials organized.
- One of the best features is how lightweight and portable they are. They can easily be slipped into a pocket or bag, so you can take them with you wherever you go.
- Great Gift for your family, friends, teachers, who loves reading books, taking notes and journaling.
| Recovery source | What was required | Likely result |
|---|---|---|
| FriendFeed stream | The user had linked Ma.gnolia to FriendFeed before the failure, allowing a recovery tool to query saved-bookmark entries. | A personal reconstruction of the items present in that feed, not a restore of the Ma.gnolia database. |
| Other social-media copies | Bookmarks had previously been shared or syndicated to another service. | Potentially partial; coverage depended on the external account and its retained history. |
| Google cache and public tools | A bookmark page or related record remained indexed or accessible through a public recovery utility. | Selective recovery, with no documented recovery rate. |
| Individual account archives | The member had independently saved or exported the data. | Varied by user; one person’s successful retrieval does not show that other members had equivalent copies. |
Jeffrey Zeldman’s account describes recovering his own bookmarks with a recovery tool. It is evidence of an individual outcome, not a guarantee for the broader membership.
What “gone for good” means here
For bookmarks that existed only in Ma.gnolia’s failed database and its failed backup, the available reporting supports treating them as lost. “Gone for good” should not be read as proof that every bookmark was erased from every external feed, cache, or personal archive. It means Ma.gnolia could not recover the collection from its own database, while some users might still find fragments elsewhere.

The practical backup lesson
The incident shows why a service’s “backup” is not necessarily an independent recovery plan: Ma.gnolia reportedly lost its primary store and its backup in the same event. For important bookmarks or other cloud data, keep an export or another independently stored copy, and periodically test that the copy can actually be restored. This is a lesson drawn from the incident, not a claim that any particular backup product was involved.
