The nine utilities in this guide cover different jobs: checking drive health, managing storage devices, adjusting disk parameters, and testing performance. They are not interchangeable, and a benchmark or SMART report cannot guarantee that a drive is healthy or predict when it will fail. Use monitoring alongside regular backups.

This is the nine-tool selection from LinuxLinks’ December 17, 2025 roundup. LinuxLinks later revised its page to list ten tools, adding nwipe and omitting Bonnie++; that later list is a different selection, not the original nine.

Which utility fits your job?

Start with the task rather than treating these programs as competing versions of the same tool. The original roundup’s descriptions support this first-pass comparison; they do not establish a full, current feature or compatibility matrix for every project.

Utility Primary job Interface or method stated Device scope stated
NVMe-CLI NVMe user-space tooling Not stated in the roundup NVMe
smartmontools SMART control and monitoring Command-line programs: smartctl and smartd ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS, and NVMe, according to the project documentation
scrutiny SMART monitoring Web UI for smartd Not stated in the roundup
openSeaChest Operations on storage devices Not stated in the roundup SATA, SAS, NVMe, and USB storage devices
GSmartControl SMART access through a graphical frontend Graphical interface for smartctl Not stated in the roundup
hdparm Adjust hard-disk parameters for performance Not stated in the roundup Hard disks
sg3_utils Send SCSI commands to devices Not stated in the roundup SCSI devices
sdparm Access SCSI device parameters Not stated in the roundup SCSI devices
Bonnie++ Test hard-drive and filesystem performance Not stated in the roundup Hard drives and filesystems

Tools for monitoring drive health

smartmontools

Use smartmontools when you want SMART monitoring and control. Its two programs are smartctl and the background monitoring daemon smartd. The project names ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS, and NVMe devices, and lists Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, macOS/Darwin, Solaris, Windows, Cygwin, and other environments as supported. That broad list is not a guarantee that every drive, controller, or USB bridge will expose its data correctly.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The project says, “In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure.” Treat that as a possibility, not a promise: SMART records device-reported indicators, and a warning may arrive late or not at all. A clean report is not proof that a disk cannot fail.

scrutiny

scrutiny is described in the roundup as a web UI for smartd SMART monitoring. It may suit someone who prefers a browser-based view over working directly with monitoring output. The roundup does not establish its current platform support, device coverage, or deployment requirements.

GSmartControl

GSmartControl provides a graphical interface for smartctl. It is the GUI-oriented option in this list for users who want SMART access without relying solely on a terminal. Its precise compatibility still depends on the operating system and whether the storage path makes device data available.

Tools for device management and protocol-specific commands

NVMe-CLI

NVMe-CLI is user-space tooling for NVMe devices. Choose it when the work is specifically NVMe-related rather than assuming it is a general-purpose utility for every hard disk or storage protocol. The roundup does not provide a detailed command or compatibility matrix.

  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

openSeaChest

openSeaChest is described as performing operations on SATA, SAS, NVMe, and USB storage devices. That range makes it relevant to device-management tasks across several connection types, but the description alone does not establish that every command works with every device or bridge.

sg3_utils

sg3_utils sends SCSI commands to devices. It is aimed at users who need to issue commands at that protocol level, not at readers seeking a graphical health dashboard.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

sdparm

sdparm accesses SCSI device parameters. Its role is distinct from general SMART monitoring: it is for working with SCSI parameters, and the roundup does not specify a broader device or operating-system support list.

Tools for tuning and performance testing

hdparm

hdparm is described as a way to tune hard-disk parameters for performance. Parameter adjustment is a different task from monitoring health; do not assume that changing a setting improves every system. The roundup does not supply a safe universal tuning recipe or establish the effect of particular settings across hardware.

Bonnie++

Bonnie++ tests hard-drive and filesystem performance. Benchmarking can help characterize performance under the conditions of a particular test, but a result by itself does not diagnose a drive’s health or predict failure. The original nine-tool roundup includes Bonnie++; the later revised LinuxLinks list does not.

SMART checks are not backups or recovery

SMART can expose reliability indicators reported by a drive and help you watch for changes, but it cannot guarantee advance notice of failure. Keep a separate, regular backup; do not wait for a SMART warning before protecting important files.

Recovery utilities solve another problem. TestDisk and PhotoRec are free and open-source recovery tools, not general tuning utilities. TestDisk focuses on partition recovery and some filesystem or boot-sector repairs. PhotoRec searches for file data by carving and does not preserve original filenames. Recovery work is not a substitute for routine monitoring or maintaining backups.

How to choose among the nine

  • For SMART monitoring: start with smartmontools; consider scrutiny for its web UI or GSmartControl for its graphical frontend.
  • For NVMe-specific work: look at NVMe-CLI.
  • For storage-device operations across several listed protocols: consider openSeaChest, while checking command and device compatibility first.
  • For SCSI commands or parameters: compare sg3_utils and sdparm by the kind of operation needed.
  • For parameter tuning: hdparm is the entry described for performance tuning; avoid applying settings without understanding the hardware and consequences.
  • For performance measurement: Bonnie++ is the listed benchmark tool, but its results are not a health diagnosis.

For any tool, verify the project’s current documentation for supported operating systems, versions, license, device requirements, and connection-bridge limitations before relying on a feature. The original roundup’s brief descriptions do not establish those details for all nine utilities.
