Yandex’s Mäntsälä data center lost its grid electricity supply on 25 April 2022 because it had no active electricity supply contract. Yandex said the facility kept running on diesel generators, although reporting indicated reduced capacity and disrupted heat recovery. Ilmatar confirmed it had terminated its electricity agreement, but the public accounts did not establish why. The site later remained with Yandex’s international successor, Nebius, and was expanded to 75 MW by early 2026.

Why did the Mäntsälä data center lose grid power?

The immediate operational cause was a gap in electricity supply contracting: Yandex had no active supply agreement for the site. Yandex’s operations chief said Ilmatar had ended the agreement unilaterally. Ilmatar CEO Juha Sarsama confirmed the termination to The Register, saying the company had terminated its electricity delivery agreement to Yandex’s Mäntsälä data center, but declined to comment further on the contractual matter.

The interruption followed a renewable-energy arrangement announced by Yandex on 30 June 2021. Its five-year power purchase agreement with Finnish company Ilmatar Energy was intended to supply wind electricity sufficient to cover 100% of the data center’s energy needs, with deliveries due to begin on 1 January 2022. The available reporting confirms the agreement ended; it does not establish Ilmatar’s reason for ending it. The geopolitical context is not proof of a specific motive.

Was the data center shut down?

No. Yandex said it was operating the facility on its own diesel generators while seeking another electricity supply agreement, and that the data center remained operational. Data Center Dynamics reported that the facility appeared to be operating at reduced capacity while off the grid.

Operating condition Grid-supplied operation Generator-backed operation in 2022
Electricity supply Grid electricity under a supply arrangement Diesel generators after the supply agreement ended
Operating capacity Normal grid connection available Yandex said the site remained operational; Data Center Dynamics reported it appeared to be at reduced capacity
Heat recovery Recovered server heat supplied to local district heating Data Center Dynamics reported heat recovery was not operating at full capacity; local heating was supplemented with other fuels

The facility also reused server heat for Mäntsälä’s district heating network. Data Center Dynamics reported that full-capacity heat recovery depended on grid power returning, so the outage affected a local heat source as well as the data center’s power supply.

Why did Ilmatar terminate the agreement?

The supplier’s motive was not publicly established in the contemporaneous accounts. In May 2022, Finnish Communications Minister Timo Harakka told Yle that “Yandex is being closely monitored.” Yle also reported at the time that Yandex was not on a sanctions list, while Finnish Energy’s managing director said the association did not direct energy companies’ customer choices. Those are statements from 2022, not a current sanctions assessment, and they do not explain Ilmatar’s contractual decision.

How large was the facility?

Early reports used different capacity figures that should not be treated as equivalent. Data Center Knowledge described the design as supporting at least 10 MW of IT equipment, while Data Center Dynamics called it a 40 MW facility. The sources do not reconcile whether these refer to different measures or phases.

Nebius announced a plan in October 2024 to expand the Mäntsälä site to 75 MW. In March 2026, Nebius said the expansion had been completed earlier that year, and local energy company Nivos reported that the data center had tripled its capacity.

What happened to the facility after the outage?

Mäntsälä stayed with Yandex’s retained international business after the separation of Yandex’s Russian business and the international business’s rebranding as Nebius. Nebius’s 2026 annual filing says it owned and operated a data center in Finland in 2025 and identifies Mäntsälä as its Finnish greenfield site.

On 31 March 2026, Nivos reported that Nebius DC Oy owned and operated the expanded Mäntsälä facility and that its waste heat continued to contribute to local district heating. Nebius separately announced a planned AI data center of up to 310 MW in Lappeenranta, with first capacity expected in 2027. Lappeenranta is a separate project, not an expansion of the Mäntsälä site.
