RPCS3’s ARM64 work has reportedly made PlayStation 3 emulation substantially faster and more power-efficient on compatible hardware. In a video presented by developer WhatCookie on 4 August 2026, the project’s recent optimizations were described as delivering 60% faster emulation while using 25% less power than the comparison baseline. Those are developer-reported figures, not results independently reproduced in a laboratory test, and they do not mean every ARM phone or handheld can now run every PS3 game.

What changed in RPCS3’s ARM64 support?

RPCS3 is a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger. Its project information lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, while the official site separately showcases ARM64 and Apple Silicon work. The ARM effort is about making the emulator practical on additional processor platforms, not replacing game-by-game compatibility testing.

Time Extension reported on 6 August 2026 that WhatCookie discussed roughly six months of ARM64 optimization work in an approximately hour-long technical video. The developer used an AYN Odin 2 running Linux as a test device, describing it as a less expensive way to work with ARM hardware than an ARM laptop with comparable hardware. That setup is an example of the development environment, not a universal recommendation or proof that every Odin 2 configuration performs identically.

How much faster is RPCS3 on ARM now?

At the beginning of the video, WhatCookie is quoted as saying: “Today, we’re able to emulate the PlayStation 3 60% faster while drawing 25% less power.” Time Extension presents this as a comparison with the state of the work six months earlier. The report does not provide a complete independent test methodology, hardware matrix or reproducible laboratory review, so the figures should be read as reported developer benchmarks.

Reported figure What it describes How to interpret it
60% faster Overall improvement claimed by WhatCookie for the newer ARM64 work versus the earlier comparison point Developer-reported; not an all-games or all-devices guarantee
25% less power Power-use reduction claimed alongside the faster emulation result Meaningful only under comparable test conditions, which are not fully documented in the report
25% average performance improvement Gain attributed to fixing the described busy-wait issue alone A reported average for that optimization, not a library-wide benchmark
10% lower power draw Power reduction attributed to the same busy-wait fix Specific to the reported test scenario
Nearly 150 times slower ARM performance versus x86 for the reported busy-wait case A narrow pathological example, not a general ARM-versus-x86 ratio

Why did a busy-wait loop matter so much?

The report focuses on code that repeatedly polls while waiting. On the tested ARM setup, that behavior was especially expensive because the relevant hardware timer was reported at 19 MHz, compared with the 2–4 GHz range cited for many x86 devices. In that particular case, the ARM path was described as nearly 150 times slower.

WhatCookie’s account, as summarized by Time Extension, describes adjusting the waiting strategy to match timer frequency. The work also involved replacing x86 Pause behavior with ARM Yield, followed by the use of an Instruction Synchronisation Barrier after later problems appeared. These details explain why an emulator can gain significantly from low-level tuning even when the game code itself has not changed; they should still be treated as the developer’s technical explanation rather than an independently audited measurement.

Can RPCS3 run on ARM?

Yes, ARM64 support is an active part of RPCS3’s platform work, and the project’s official material explicitly features ARM64 and Apple Silicon. Actual availability depends on the operating system, build and device. A current ARM-compatible build and a processor with enough single-thread and graphics performance are prerequisites; architecture alone does not establish a playable result.

An older official FAQ edited in April 2020 contains x64-only and older macOS language. That page predates the later ARM64 and Apple Silicon material and should not be used as the current description of ARM platform availability.

Can an ARM handheld play PS3 games?

Some may, but the answer is title- and device-specific. The reported test used an AYN Odin 2 with Linux, which demonstrates a practical development target rather than a guarantee for all ARM handhelds. When comparing devices, check the exact processor, operating system and RPCS3 build, then look for observed performance in the specific game you want to play. Power draw also needs comparable conditions; a result measured on one handheld cannot be transferred directly to another.

  • Device: identify the ARM processor and cooling configuration, not just the product name.
  • Software: verify that an ARM64-capable RPCS3 build and your operating system are supported.
  • Game: consult the title’s compatibility entry and recent user reports.
  • Performance: expect differences from resolution, frame-rate targets, drivers and emulator settings.
  • Power: compare measurements made under the same game, workload and power profile.

Which PS3 games work in RPCS3?

Compatibility remains game-specific. RPCS3’s compatibility database uses the categories Playable, Ingame, Intro, Loadable and Nothing. “Playable” means a game can be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches; it does not mean every device reaches the same frame rate or that every feature is perfect.

Search the live compatibility entry for the exact game before choosing hardware. Database results can change as emulator builds, drivers and game fixes evolve, so a library-wide promise would be misleading.

Does RPCS3 work on Apple Silicon?

Apple Silicon is explicitly included in RPCS3’s official showcase, so compatible Macs are part of the project’s ARM64 story. The practical result still depends on the macOS build, the individual game and current compatibility status. The April 2020 FAQ’s older macOS wording should be treated as historical rather than as a current platform specification.

Do you need a special controller?

No special controller is required for the ARM optimization itself. RPCS3’s controller guidance includes Sony’s DualSense among supported choices, and the FAQ describes local multiplayer with up to seven controllers. Controller features remain game-dependent, so confirm what the particular title uses before buying hardware. A controller can improve setup and comfort, but it has no bearing on the reported ARM performance gains.

What the ARM progress does—and does not—prove

  • It does show: focused emulator engineering can close part of the performance and efficiency gap between ARM and x86 in demanding code paths.
  • It does not show: that all ARM devices, phones or handhelds run PS3 software smoothly.
  • It does show: ARM64 and Apple Silicon are being treated as real RPCS3 targets rather than purely theoretical platforms.
  • It does not show: that every PS3 game is compatible, or that a “Playable” database label guarantees identical results on every system.
  • It does show: why low-level timer, wait-loop and instruction behavior can materially affect emulator performance.
  • It does not show: an independently validated 60% speed increase or 25% power reduction across a standardized hardware test suite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RPCS3 officially available for every ARM device?

No. ARM64 support and Apple Silicon are showcased by the project, but usable builds, drivers, operating systems and game performance vary by device.

Does the 60% figure mean every PS3 game is 60% faster?

No. It is a developer-reported comparison for the newer ARM64 work and should not be applied uniformly to every game or processor.

Should I buy an AYN Odin 2 for RPCS3?

The Odin 2 was used as a Linux test device in the reported optimization work. That does not constitute an endorsement or establish identical results for every configuration.
