Recent failure figures vary widely by component and by how they were collected, and there is no consistent historical dataset here to compare today’s PCs with every earlier generation. The numbers are useful for understanding specific samples, not for proving a broad “ever” trend.
What recent PC component figures show
Puget Systems’ 2025 report, published in 2026, tracks components used in its desktop and rackmount workstations; SSD and memory data include limited laptop and server use. Its figures combine factory burn-in results with customer field reports. Puget says it screens out some brands and product families, which may lower rates relative to the wider market, while its strict failure standards can raise rates for complex components such as motherboards. The report also warns that its 2025 date range is not directly comparable with earlier years. These are Puget’s experience, not an industry-wide census: Puget Systems’ 2025 hardware reliability report.
Within those limits, Puget’s numbers show that observed rates differ by component and product group:
- Processors: Intel Core Ultra 7 265K CPUs had a 0.77% failure rate in Puget’s 2025 data. Across the broader Ryzen 9000 and Core Ultra 200 Series groups, the rates were 2.52% and 2.49%, respectively; Puget said the small difference was not statistically significant.
- Graphics cards: NVIDIA Founders Edition consumer GPUs had a 0.25% failure rate, the lowest among the consumer GeForce RTX cards Puget sold in 2025.
- Motherboards: Puget reported a recent average failure rate of 5–6% in its systems. More than three-quarters of those failures were caught at the factory rather than after delivery.
- Memory: The 2025 rates were 0.19% for Kingston and 0.27% for Micron. Kingston ValueRAM DDR5-5600 32GB desktop memory had a 0.09% rate.
- SSDs: Puget’s combined SSD failure rate in its records was 0.74%; Kingston KC3000 drives had a 0.22% rate in 2025. Samsung 870 QVO 8TB drives had no failures in 2025 and a 0.19% rate over the full period Puget had carried that model.
These rates describe the products and observation periods in Puget’s data; they are not guarantees about an individual part or a prediction for every home PC. The mix of factory-caught and field failures also matters: a component that fails during screening has a different consequence for a buyer from one that fails after installation.

Why other failure statistics are not directly comparable
Data-center drives are not home-PC drives
Backblaze’s 2025 data show a 1.36% annualized failure rate for HDDs in its data-center fleet: 4,317 drive failures over 115,638,676 drive-days. That is a useful measure of the drives Backblaze operated under its fleet conditions, but it is not the probability that a hard drive in a consumer desktop will fail. The workload, drive population, ages, and observation method differ. See Backblaze’s 2025 drive statistics.
Warranty claims are not failure rates
Warranty Week reported an average 1.11% warranty claims rate for U.S. computer OEMs in 2025. That is a claims-to-sales measure, not the share of PC components that failed. Claims depend on warranty terms and customer behavior as well as product performance, so the figure should not be lined up against component failure rates as if they meant the same thing. See Warranty Week’s 2025 computer OEM warranty analysis.

Older figures do not create a reliable historical trend
Puget’s 2024 report said 1% of drives it sold failed in the field; overall storage-drive failure was 1.6%, with two-thirds of failures occurring in the field. The 2025 report uses a different date range and explicitly cautions against direct year-over-year comparison, so these figures do not establish that storage reliability improved or worsened. The 2024 report also urged readers to keep backups current: Puget Systems’ 2024 hardware reliability report.

- Sample size and component age: A rate based on a small or unusually young sample may not describe long-term use.
- Observation window: A rate over a specified period is different from an annualized rate.
- Definition of failure: Sources may count different symptoms or failure thresholds.
- Factory screening versus field failure: Determine whether failures caught before delivery are included or separated.
- Metric type: Unit failure rates, annualized drive failure rates, and warranty claims rates measure different things.
Puget’s author William George makes the scope limitation explicit: “Before jumping into the results, it is important to stress that the information presented here is based on our experience at Puget Systems and does not cover the entire computer hardware industry.” That is why its results can inform a component-level discussion without settling whether all modern PC hardware is better or worse than hardware from earlier eras.
What PC owners should do
Even when a component’s observed failure rate is low, failure is not the only risk to important files. Maintain a current backup of data you cannot afford to lose, and check that you can restore it. Puget’s 2024 field-drive finding is a practical reminder that storage failures do occur; it does not identify a particular backup product as more reliable.
