No—Valve said the sample it examined was not a breach of Steam systems, and it did not confirm that 89 million Steam accounts were compromised. The number came from an allegation that records were being offered for sale. Valve described the sample as older SMS messages containing one-time codes and destination phone numbers, not Steam passwords or account-linked personal information.
What Valve confirmed—and what it did not
In a May 14, 2025 statement, Valve said: “We have examined the leak sample and have determined this was NOT a breach of Steam systems.” That is Valve’s assessment of the sample it reviewed; the statement did not establish where the messages originally came from.
Valve said the sample contained older SMS texts with one-time codes and the phone numbers to which those messages were sent. The codes were valid only for 15-minute time frames. According to Valve, the sample did not connect phone numbers to Steam accounts and contained no passwords, payment information, or other personal data.
Where the 89-million figure came from
Contemporaneous coverage by GameSpot and Windows Central attributed the claim to a person identified as Underdark, who said records were being offered for sale. Valve did not verify that figure, confirm that the records represented Steam accounts, or say that 89 million users had been affected. It is therefore accurate to call it an alleged 89-million-record figure—not 89 million confirmed compromised accounts.

Was Steam hacked, and did your password leak?
Valve said the sample it examined was not a breach of Steam systems. Its statement also said the data did not include passwords or link phone numbers to Steam accounts. That does not establish the origin or full scope of all records alleged to be for sale, but the material described by Valve is not evidence that Steam account passwords were exposed.
Valve said it was still investigating the messages’ source and noted that SMS messages travel unencrypted in transit through multiple providers. Its statement did not name a carrier or vendor as responsible, so the origin remains unresolved.

What Steam users should do
Valve said users did not need to change passwords or phone numbers because of this event. Its advice was to be cautious with security messages you did not request, check your account security, and enable Steam Mobile Authenticator if you have not already.
- Unexpected security text? Treat it cautiously. Do not share a code or follow a link in an unsolicited message.
- Review your account: Check Steam’s account security settings for anything unfamiliar.
- Consider the authenticator: Valve recommended Steam Mobile Authenticator as an account-security option. It did not say users needed to buy a separate device or service.
SMS codes and Steam Mobile Authenticator
The messages in the sample were SMS-delivered one-time codes. Valve said these old codes were time-limited and could not be used to breach an account. Separately, Valve recommended enabling Steam Mobile Authenticator; its statement did not say that every user had to change authentication methods as a result of the incident.
