The models were aimed at different write-intensity levels, from Extreme for write-heavy work to Ascend and Eco for read-heavy workloads. The specifications below are announcement-era figures reported by Data Center Knowledge, not independent test results or evidence of current availability.
What SanDisk announced
Data Center Knowledge reported on April 1, 2014, that SanDisk unveiled the four CloudSpeed models at Interop and Cloud Connect in Las Vegas. The drives used 19-nanometer MLC NAND and a 6Gb/s SATA interface, and were positioned for enterprise servers and cloud infrastructure.
For the family, the report listed capacities from 240GB to 960GB, sequential performance of up to 450 MB/s read and 400 MB/s write, and random performance of up to 80,000 read and 15,000 write IOPS. These are maximum figures reported for the family; the article does not establish that every capacity or model achieved each maximum. Data Center Knowledge’s announcement report is the source for these specifications.
How the four CloudSpeed models differed
SanDisk divided the additions by workload write intensity. The report gives some endurance and performance figures for specific models, but not a complete set of comparable metrics for all four.

#1 Best Overall
- MASSIVE CAPACITY - CloudSpeed Eco Gen. II SATA SSD, with 1.92TB of capacity, serves demanding tiers of service at multi-petabyte capacity levels.
- MISSION-CRITICAL OPERATIONS - SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS business models are evolving to support enterprises for “mission-critical” type of infrastructure and applications.
- UNRIVALED COMPATIBILITY - This flash storage SATA SSD works within existing infrastructure – SATA interface – and replaces hard disk drives (HDDs) for an overall lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and benefits of greater storage density.
- VERY RELIABLE - In order to serve the new demands of cloud services, flash storage will have to perform with reliable throughput, data integrity & protection mechanisms, and better flash endurance.
- HYPERSCALE ENVIRONMENTS - To help enable cloud service providers deliver richer data services and apps, while addressing growing data capacity demands, SanDisk offers a SATA SSD specifically designed for hyperscale environments.
| Model | Intended workload | Announcement-era specifications reported |
|---|---|---|
| CloudSpeed Extreme | Write-intensive applications, including database logging and high-performance computing | Up to 10 drive writes per day (DWPD); up to 75,000 read and 25,000 write IOPS; up to 14.6 petabytes written (PBW) over the drive’s life |
| CloudSpeed Ultra | Mixed-use workloads, including online transaction processing, financial transactions, email and messaging, e-commerce, virtual desktop infrastructure, and collaboration | Up to 3 DWPD; model-specific capacity and IOPS figures not stated in the report |
| CloudSpeed Ascend | Read-intensive workloads, including file servers, web applications, and virtual tape libraries | 240GB–960GB capacity range; model-specific endurance and IOPS figures not stated in the report |
| CloudSpeed Eco | Entry-level read-intensive uses, including web servers, content repositories, photo sharing, media streaming, and cloud computing | Model-specific capacity, endurance, and IOPS figures not stated in the report |
DWPD indicates how many times a drive’s full capacity could be written per day over its specified endurance period; PBW expresses cumulative writes over drive life. The report gives the Extreme and Ultra figures as “up to” values and does not supply the endurance period or a full model-by-model test methodology, so they should be read as product specifications reported at launch, not as guarantees for an individual drive today.
Who the product family was for
The CloudSpeed range was an enterprise-storage lineup, not a consumer SSD recommendation. Its distinctions were intended to let server and cloud operators select storage according to a workload’s read/write balance: Extreme for heavy writes, Ultra for mixed activity, and Ascend or Eco for read-dominant jobs. The examples show the intended deployment categories, but they do not establish compatibility with a particular server, controller, RAID card, operating system, or firmware.

At the announcement, John Scaramuzzo, then SanDisk senior vice president and general manager of Enterprise Storage Solutions, said the family was designed to serve applications across the read-write spectrum without forcing organizations and server designers to trade system performance against cost. That was SanDisk’s positioning statement, not an independently measured comparison.

The announcement report documents what SanDisk said about the family at launch. It does not establish whether CloudSpeed drives are currently sold, their present condition or price, whether firmware or support remains available, or whether a particular listing is compatible with existing hardware. Treat any current purchase as a legacy-hardware decision that requires checking the exact model, interface, capacity, condition, and system compatibility with the seller or vendor.
