Eastern Ontario’s 753 area code was introduced on March 26, 2022, as an overlay for the existing 343 and 613 region. It did not replace anyone’s number or create a new calling area: existing customers kept their numbers, while people requesting new numbers could be assigned 753. Local calls use ten digits, including the area code.
Where the 753 area code applies
Area code 753 serves the same geographic area as 343 and 613 in eastern Ontario. The Telecommunications Alliance announcement described 132 exchange areas, including Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville, Brockville and Cornwall. Local calling areas remained the same. The CRTC’s 2021 decision approved 753 as relief for the 343/613 area-code complex, effective March 26, 2022.
This arrangement is called an overlay: more numbering capacity is added to an existing area rather than dividing it into separate territories. The CRTC explains overlays in its numbering-area-code overview.
What the change means for your phone number
If you already had a 613 or 343 number, it did not change when 753 was introduced. The rollout was gradual; a new area code did not apply to every customer on March 26. From that date, customers requesting a new number could receive one with 753, as the Telecommunications Alliance announcement of March 23, 2022 explained.

753 is not a separate local calling zone, and its introduction does not require you to change phone providers.
How to dial local calls
Dial the area code plus the seven-digit number for local calls—ten digits in total. Ten-digit local dialing was already in place for this relief plan; including the area code distinguishes numbers that may share the same seven-digit digits across overlapping codes. The CRTC set out that requirement in Telecom Decision 2021-372.

The 2022 customer announcement said 211, 311, 411, 611 and 911 remained three-digit special service numbers. Do not add an area code when dialing those listed services.
What businesses may need to check
Some business phone systems restrict long-distance calls based on configured area codes. If your system blocks or misclassifies calls to 753, ask the administrator or service provider to add 753 as a local area code. The public guidance specifically identified this issue for business customers; it does not mean every business system needs a change.

What is known about the next area-code forecast
The 753 introduction is complete, but it is distinct from later numbering forecasts. In a 2025 decision, the CRTC listed March 2029 as the then-current projected exhaust date for the 343/613/753 complex and 871 as the proposed relief code. These are planning figures in that decision, not confirmation that 871 is active or that the forecast cannot change.
The earlier October 2022 exhaust date was a historical Canadian Numbering Administrator projection cited in the CRTC’s 2021 decision. It informed the relief schedule at the time and should not be mistaken for a current forecast.
