The Snappiflex is a Camp Snap fixed-focus digital camera rebuilt inside a custom 3D-printed body with a waist-level viewfinder. It borrows the viewing style of a twin-lens reflex (TLR) camera, but it is not a conventional film TLR: it keeps the Camp Snap’s digital camera module and electronics. Hackaday described it as a digital twin-lens reflex camera “of sorts.”
What is the Snappiflex?
Snappiness modified a Camp Snap camera by designing a TLR-style enclosure around its existing electronics. The Camp Snap is a fixed-focus digital camera with an optical viewfinder and shot counter. Inside are a camera module and a microcontroller board that saves photographs to an SD card. The project’s custom case positions the camera module centrally, while ribbon-cable extensions let the controls sit in the new body layout.
The result is a digital camera whose shape and way of composing resemble a waist-level TLR, rather than a newly designed film camera. Hackaday’s Jenny List reported the project on February 9, 2025: Hackaday’s report on the Snappiflex.
How does its waist-level viewfinder work?
The custom finder uses a lens, a mirror, and a Fresnel lens. These elements create a viewing arrangement on top of the camera, so the photographer can look down into the finder to compose a picture. The conversion also adds a filter ring and a “Snappiflex” logo.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging

- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
That viewing experience is the source of the TLR resemblance. A conventional TLR is a film camera with a distinct paired-lens design; the Snappiflex, by contrast, retains the Camp Snap’s digital imaging module. Its body and finder borrow a familiar camera form, but its capture system remains digital.
What changes—and what stays the same?
| Feature | Snappiflex conversion |
|---|---|
| Image capture | Camp Snap digital camera module; the report says the conversion retains the Camp Snap’s image quality, but provides no sample comparison or controlled test. |
| Body | Custom 3D-printed TLR-style case designed around the existing electronics. |
| Composition | Waist-level finder described as using a lens, mirror, and Fresnel lens. |
| Controls | Positioned in the custom layout using ribbon-cable extensions. |
| Build documentation | No complete build guide or parts list is provided in Hackaday’s report. |
Is it a real twin-lens reflex camera?
Not in the conventional film-camera sense. “Twin-lens reflex” normally describes a camera design with separate viewing and taking lenses; the report establishes that the Snappiflex has a TLR-inspired custom body and waist-level finder, not that it reproduces the full optical or mechanical design of a traditional TLR. Calling it a digital TLR “of sorts” captures the distinction: its finder and handling evoke the format, while the Camp Snap module takes the picture.

Can you buy one or build one?
The report documents a modification, not a verified retail product or bundled conversion kit. It does not identify a current Camp Snap model number matching the project camera, provide design-file details, or give printer, material, or build settings. The supported way to describe the base product is a Camp Snap digital camera; the available information does not establish that a finished Snappiflex is sold.
Hackaday also does not provide measured image-quality results, cost, durability testing, or a quantitative comparison with a conventional TLR. The project is best understood as a creative camera conversion that changes the enclosure and viewing experience, not as evidence of improved photographic performance.
