In October 2013, Phoenix-based IO opened its first international data center in Singapore, using factory-built modular infrastructure to serve an anchor customer, Goldman Sachs. The launch showed how IO planned to deploy capacity across locations; it did not establish that site-level backup power could be dispensed with, nor does it describe IO’s current business.
What IO launched in Singapore
Data Center Knowledge reported on October 15, 2013, that IO had opened a Singapore facility in a former Seagate manufacturing site and made it the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters. IO said it had brought the site’s capacity online in six months. CEO George Slessman put it this way: “We turned up capacity in the Singapore market in six months.” Read the 2013 launch report.
The rollout relied on IO.Anywhere modules built and customized at IO’s Phoenix factory. Eight modules were prepared for anchor tenant Goldman Sachs, shipped from Long Beach, California, and installed in Singapore. The report said the sea shipment took about six weeks. IO also installed two modules for its own operations.
Customers, distribution and reported capacity
EVIA iSolutions, described in the 2013 report as a business-continuity specialist, was named as IO’s second Singapore customer. The report also said the facility could accommodate up to 122 modules. That is a capacity figure reported at the time, not a measure of the site’s present capacity.

IO’s route to market in the region included an agreement with Tractors Machinery International (TMI), which the report described as the exclusive IO.Anywhere distributor in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. The reporting establishes those roles for the launch period; it does not verify whether the customer or distributor relationships continue today.
IO’s modular-infrastructure thesis
IO argued that factory-built modules and software-driven management could make it easier to place IT capacity in multiple locations and distribute workloads between them. Slessman’s broader contention was that smaller organizations might gain some of the resilience associated with large cloud companies by spreading applications across sites.

He also predicted that application resilience could become less dependent on the resilience of any single site: “With the advent of new technology, the resiliency of the site will become irrelevant to the resiliency of the application.” In the same 2013 report, he said, “I think we’re within 24 months of the day when most apps can live with no UPS and generator.” These were his views and predictions, not demonstrated outcomes or current engineering guidance. The report does not establish that backup power was unnecessary at the Singapore facility.
What the 2013 story does—and does not—say about Singapore today
Iron Mountain currently markets colocation service at a Singapore site in Serangoon. Its service page lists 7.3 MW of total power capacity and a facility area of 14,200 square meters. Those specifications describe Iron Mountain’s currently marketed service, not the IO facility reported in 2013. Iron Mountain’s Singapore colocation page.

The two company histories should not be merged. Iron Mountain announced in 2017 that it had agreed to acquire two Credit Suisse data centers, including a 153,000-square-foot Singapore site in Serangoon; a subsequent filing says it acquired those operations in March 2018. Iron Mountain’s 2026 guide says its facility previously served Credit Suisse. By contrast, the 2013 IO report describes a former Seagate manufacturing facility. The available records do not establish that Iron Mountain’s present SIN-1 facility is IO’s former Singapore site. 2017 acquisition announcement; Iron Mountain’s 2026 Singapore guide.

The six-month rollout, six-week shipment, eight Goldman Sachs modules, two IO-operated modules and capacity for up to 122 modules are all figures attributed to the contemporaneous Data Center Knowledge report. They describe the 2013 project as reported, not an independent study or verified present-day facility specifications.
