German authorities seized the distributed server infrastructure of Kingdom Market in an internationally coordinated operation that began on 16 December 2023. The BKA and Frankfurt’s Central Office for Combating Internet Crime (ZIT) announced the takedown on 20 December. The English-language darknet market, reachable through Tor and I2P, primarily sold illegal drugs. In May 2026, Alan Bill pleaded guilty in the United States to his role in operating it and was sentenced to 200 months in prison.

When was Kingdom Market shut down?

The BKA and Frankfurt ZIT said measures to seize Kingdom Market’s multi-country server infrastructure began on 16 December 2023. They publicly announced the closure four days later, on 20 December. The BKA described the action as an internationally coordinated operation.

What was Kingdom Market, and what did it sell?

Kingdom Market was an English-language service on the darknet. The BKA said illegal narcotics were its main business, alongside listings for malware, criminal services, and forged documents. A later U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) account described transactions involving dangerous drugs, stolen financial information, fraudulent identification documents, counterfeit currency, and computer malware.

The BKA reported that the market accepted Bitcoin, Litecoin, Monero, and Zcash. Operators charged a 3% commission on sales. The DOJ separately described buyers as using cryptocurrency and anonymous or semi-anonymous accounts.

How large was the market?

In its December 2023 announcement, the BKA reported more than 42,000 products listed on the platform, including about 3,600 from Germany. It also reported tens of thousands of customer accounts and several hundred seller accounts. These are the figures published by the BKA at the time of the takedown; the announcement does not give exact totals for the accounts.

How did authorities take it down?

The German operation targeted Kingdom Market’s distributed server infrastructure across multiple countries. The BKA named cooperation with law-enforcement agencies in the United States, Switzerland, Moldova, and Ukraine. The DOJ’s later sentencing announcement also listed U.S. investigative participants: IRS Criminal Investigation, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, and the Missouri Department of Revenue, alongside German, Swiss, Moldovan, and Ukrainian agencies.

The BKA’s 2023 announcement said analysis of the seized servers and work to identify those involved were continuing at that point. The later U.S. case documents a prosecution of one person; it does not establish that every seller or customer was identified or charged.

The DOJ said Bill agreed to forfeit five types of cryptocurrency and the domains Kingdommarket.live and Kingdommarket.so, which authorities shut down. The DOJ announcement did not specify the five cryptocurrency types in the information summarized here.

What evidence did prosecutors describe?

The DOJ said Kingdom’s servers recorded more than 1,500 heroin sales and nearly 600 sales of products that sellers claimed were oxycodone. Undercover investigators also bought fentanyl, methamphetamine, and a U.S. passport through the market. These transaction figures and purchases are reported by the DOJ; the oxycodone figure refers to products represented as oxycodone, not a finding that every product contained that drug.

U.S. Attorney Thomas C. Albus said Bill helped run a darknet market selling stolen identity and financial information, counterfeit currency, and illegal drugs, including “bogus prescription drugs containing fentanyl.” After sentencing, Judge Cristian M. Stevens said, as reported by the DOJ, “It’s hard to even imagine the amount of misery that the defendant’s actions have caused.”
