Where is the Moon cave?
The cave is beneath a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis, about 230 miles northeast of the Apollo 11 landing site. The pit provides a skylight-like opening into the subsurface, while the conduit identified by radar begins at its base.
NASA’s 2014 survey reported more than 200 lunar pits, but that is a count of pits, not verified caves. Some pits may lead to caves or other voids; a pit’s appearance alone does not establish how it formed or what lies below it.
How did scientists find it?
An international team reanalyzed radar data collected in 2010 by the Mini-RF instrument aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The analysis, reported by NASA on July 18, 2024, found evidence that a cave conduit extends more than 200 feet (about 61 meters) beyond the pit base. NASA’s report on the radar analysis describes the result as evidence from remote sensing, not a direct exploration of the cave.

The measured stretch is not the cave’s total length. NASA says it could extend for miles, but that is a possibility, not a measured extent. The radar finding does not establish the conduit’s complete geometry, the condition of its rock or whether it could safely support a habitat.
Could a cave protect astronauts?
Rock and overhangs could shield explorers from some radiation and micrometeorites and buffer the Moon’s extreme temperature swings. These are reasons to investigate lunar pits and caves, not proof that this particular cave is safe for people.

NASA reported in 2022 that permanently shaded areas in studied lunar pits remain around 63°F (17°C), based on LRO data and computer modeling. By comparison, the lunar surface can reach about 260°F (127°C) in daylight and minus 280°F (minus 173°C) at night. NASA said a cave extending from a pit could have a similar temperature; the 63°F figure is not a direct measurement inside the Mare Tranquillitatis cave. NASA’s explanation of the pit-temperature study distinguishes those modeled shaded-area conditions from the potential conditions in a cave.
NASA has described lunar pits as potentially useful in supporting surface activity as well as valuable sites for studying lunar geology. Whether this cave could serve either role would depend on conditions and access that have not yet been established.

How might the pit and cave have formed?
A pit can form when the roof over an underground void collapses, leaving an opening similar to a skylight. One proposed explanation for some lunar voids is a lava tube: lava flows beneath a cooling crust, then drains away and leaves a hollow passage. Impact-melt settings are another possibility NASA has discussed, and a pit’s appearance does not prove a particular origin. NASA’s overview of lunar pits covers their possible origins and scientific value.
The distinction matters: a mapped pit is an observed surface feature, whereas a cave’s existence, route and dimensions below it require further evidence. The radar analysis supports a conduit at this site; it does not establish that all lunar pits contain accessible caves.

What would it take to assess the cave as a base site?
Before a habitat could be considered, a reconnaissance effort would need to establish whether a route into the cave is feasible and what conditions explorers or equipment would encounter. Key questions include:
- What are the opening’s shape, dimensions and approach terrain?
- How far does the conduit continue, and what is its geometry?
- How stable is the rock along the opening and inside the cave?
- What radiation, temperature and other environmental conditions are actually present?
- What communications and power arrangements would be needed for exploration and sustained operations?
Ground-penetrating radar is one candidate tool for learning more about subsurface passages. A NASA-hosted 2020 technical study tested the method in two terrestrial lava tubes, resolving cave ceilings and enabling estimates of their widths; forward modeling suggested it might work similarly on the Moon or Mars. That study did not map the Mare Tranquillitatis conduit with ground-penetrating radar. The study demonstrates a possible technique, not a completed survey of this lunar cave.

Is this NASA’s planned lunar base?
No. NASA’s described Moon Base plan is phased around the lunar South Pole, starting with robotic missions and technology demonstrations before adding infrastructure and human operations. Mare Tranquillitatis is a separate, equatorial location. NASA’s Moon Base overview describes that South Pole plan; it does not identify this cave as a selected base site. The sources available do not establish a mission selected to enter or map this specific cave.
