Intel’s published roadmap expected its next-generation 800G IPUs to ship to customers and partners in 2025/26, following planned 400G products. That was a roadmap target—not confirmation that an 800G Intel IPU shipped commercially in calendar 2025.

What Intel’s roadmap said about 800G IPUs

Intel described an 800G generation built around both FPGA and ASIC designs. In its 2022 Intel IPU and Baidu Taihang DPU Whitepaper, the company said: “In 2025 or later, Intel will launch a new generation of 800G IPU product based on FPGA and ASIC.” Intel’s roadmap fact sheet gave a more specific planning window: 2025/26, when next-generation 800G IPUs were expected to ship to customers and partners.

Those statements describe future plans, not proof of a completed commercial launch. The cited public materials do not establish a named 800G SKU, production volume, confirmed customer shipment, or retail availability. In particular, they do not verify that an Intel 800G IPU shipped in 2025.

How the 800G plan followed earlier IPU generations

Intel presented 800G as a progression from 200G-class products through a planned 400G generation. The table reflects the timing and status language in Intel’s roadmap fact sheet; it should not be read as independent verification that each product shipped on schedule.

Roadmap period Products named Data-rate class What Intel said about timing
2022 Mount Evans (ASIC) and Oak Springs Canyon (FPGA) 200G-class Listed on Intel’s roadmap for 2022; the fact sheet does not establish a specific customer-shipment date here.
2023/24 Mount Morgan and Hot Springs Canyon 400G Expected to ship to customers and partners.
2025/26 Next-generation 800G IPUs 800G Expected to ship to customers and partners.

How the planned designs differed

FPGA-based programmability

Oak Springs Canyon paired an Intel Xeon D processor with an Intel Agilex FPGA. The FPGA approach provides programmability, a useful distinction for infrastructure workloads that may need configurable acceleration. Intel’s roadmap placed Oak Springs Canyon in its 200G-class generation.

ASIC-based optimization

Mount Evans was Intel’s first ASIC IPU and was developed with Google Cloud, according to Intel’s roadmap article. Intel’s roadmap listed it as a 200G-class product. The later 800G generation was described as including ASIC as well as FPGA products, but the cited materials do not identify the models, configurations, or workload split for those planned 800G designs.

What an IPU is for—and who should care

An Infrastructure Processing Unit (IPU) handles data-center infrastructure work that might otherwise consume host CPU resources. Intel describes its IPU approach as isolating tenant applications from provider services while offloading infrastructure tasks. Its stated use cases include:

  • Virtualized networking and security isolation.
  • Storage virtualization and disaggregation.
  • NVMe transport acceleration.
  • Secure boot and infrastructure air-gapping.

That makes the roadmap relevant primarily to hyperscale and cloud operators and enterprise data-center teams evaluating infrastructure offload—not to consumer PC buyers. The 800G figure refers to the planned IPU generation’s networking rate class; it is not evidence of a consumer adapter or a particular retail configuration.

The available Intel adapter is a 200GbE reference point

Intel’s IPU Adapter E2100 is specified for either 2 × 100GbE or 1 × 200GbE connectivity and uses 16 Arm Neoverse N1 cores. It provides a concrete 200GbE reference point for Intel’s IPU lineup, but it is not an 800G adapter and does not confirm that the planned 800G generation became a shipping product.
