Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUsually, no: a typical server does not need its own battery for outage protection. The usual solution is a compatible uninterruptible power supply (UPS), installed near the server or as part of the facility’s power system. It can bridge a short interruption or provide time for an orderly shutdown; longer runtime may require additional battery capacity or generator support.
What does “batteries in a server” mean?
A server may contain a small battery for a specific component or function, but that is not the same as a battery capable of powering the whole server during an outage. For whole-system outage protection, the relevant design is generally a UPS connected to the server equipment or a facility-level backup-power system.
A UPS is an external power device with batteries that supplies connected equipment when normal input power is interrupted. It can be a rackmount unit or a tower unit for a smaller deployment. The battery does not connect directly to an arbitrary server power supply: check the UPS output and the server’s electrical requirements.
Why server power-supply redundancy is not battery backup
Redundant power-supply units (PSUs) and a UPS address different failure modes. Redundant PSUs provide alternate input paths to the server; a UPS provides battery-backed power when its input supply is interrupted. Whether a server is protected depends on how its power feeds are connected and what the UPS and facility wiring support. Two PSUs alone do not establish that the server will stay powered through an outage.

- 1500VA / 900W RELIABLE BACKUP POWER: The highest VA capacity available for home use; delivers short-term battery power to keep essential devices powered during blackouts, surges, and unexpected power interruptions
- TEN PROTECTED OUTLETS: Power your entire setup with 5 battery backup outlets for essential devices, and 5 surge-only outlets for peripherals. Plus built-in coaxial and Ethernet surge protection for added peace of mind
- AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATION (AVR): Corrects low voltage brownouts (88V+) and surges (+/-13%) without draining battery. Boosts or trims to stable 120V. Extends runtime for blackouts; Active PFC compatible for gaming PCs
- REPLACEABLE BATTERY & ENERGY STAR UPS: User-replaceable battery (APCRBC124, sold separately) for zero-downtime swaps. ENERGY STAR certified for 92%+ efficiency, cutting energy costs vs standard UPS units
- LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
Where the design requires redundant power paths, map each server feed to a genuinely separate, supported path. The right topology depends on the installation; do not assume that plugging both PSUs into the same UPS creates independent protection.
How much runtime can a UPS provide?
Runtime depends on the UPS, the connected load, battery configuration and battery condition—not simply on the fact that a unit is marketed for servers. Eaton says included batteries on network/server UPS systems typically provide five to ten minutes at 80% load. That is Eaton’s general guidance, accessed in 2026, not a guarantee for a particular UPS, server, installation or battery age. Eaton advises consulting the manufacturer’s runtime data for the supported load range: Eaton’s UPS selection guidance.

Choose a target outcome before choosing a runtime: ride through a brief interruption, allow time for a controlled shutdown, or keep services running until another power source takes over. A headline VA rating alone does not tell you how long the UPS will support your actual server load. Use reliable load information and the manufacturer’s runtime data; a PSU’s nameplate rating is not a measurement of the server’s real consumption.
What should you check before choosing a UPS?
- Load and capacity: establish the expected load of the equipment the UPS will protect and confirm the unit can support it.
- Runtime at that load: consult the UPS manufacturer’s runtime information for your load and battery configuration rather than inferring runtime from a headline capacity figure.
- Voltage and plugs: match the UPS output to the server equipment’s input voltage and connectors.
- Waveform compatibility: verify compatibility with the exact server PSU. Dell warns that some PowerEdge configurations with Active PFC supplies can behave poorly with modified-sine-wave, simulated or square-wave UPS output when the UPS switches to battery. See Dell’s Active PFC and UPS guidance.
- Placement and format: compare rackmount and tower units for smaller deployments; larger facilities may use centralized protection or UPS units near server rows.
- Expansion and shutdown: if you need more runtime, check whether the UPS supports compatible external battery modules. If the goal is an orderly shutdown, check its power-management and shutdown-coordination capabilities.
- Outage duration and redundancy: decide which power paths must remain available and whether outages longer than the battery design target require generator support.
Where should battery backup sit?
For a home lab or small server room, a suitably sized rackmount or tower UPS near the equipment is a common approach. At data-center scale, protection may be centralized or placed closer to server rows. Neither arrangement is universally best; the choice depends on the site’s loads, electrical design, redundancy goals and installation requirements. ABB describes both centralized data-center protection and UPS placement beside server rows in its data-center UPS overview.

A UPS is often a bridge, not an unlimited power source. Schneider Electric describes UPS systems as providing short-term backup until generators come online. If the required runtime is longer than the UPS batteries can provide, consider compatible additional battery modules or a generator-backed design rather than assuming a standard UPS will cover an extended outage. See Schneider Electric’s data-center and network solutions.

- Define the purpose. Decide whether you need brief ride-through, time for controlled shutdown or continuity until another power source starts.
- Identify the protected equipment and load. Base sizing on the equipment the UPS will support and reliable load information, not only PSU nameplate ratings.
- Check electrical compatibility. Confirm voltage, connectors and UPS waveform compatibility with the specific server PSU configuration.
- Use runtime data for the actual load. Ask the UPS manufacturer or consult its runtime tables for the chosen configuration.
- Plan expansion and longer outages. Check support for compatible external battery modules and determine whether generator support is needed for the intended duration.
- Verify feeds and installation. Confirm that redundant server power paths are actually separate where required, and consult the server and UPS documentation and qualified installation help as appropriate.
There is no established market-wide figure here for how many servers have batteries, how many deployments use UPS systems or what runtime is typical across all installations. Actual performance depends on the specific UPS and server, battery condition, power quality, site wiring and local electrical requirements.
