January reports described an unconfirmed proposal; Facebook and Georgia formally announced the project on March 7, 2018. Meta now lists Stanton Springs as its Georgia data center.
Where is Facebook’s Atlanta-area data center?
The site is Stanton Springs, a development near Social Circle, Georgia, east of Atlanta. The “Atlanta” label in the headlines referred to the broader metro area, not the city itself. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s January 2018 report described Facebook’s interest in Stanton Springs, and its March report placed the formally announced campus near Social Circle. How did the reports develop?
January 2018: reported plans, not a confirmed commitment
On January 23, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Facebook was said to be pursuing a Stanton Springs campus. It cited a person familiar with the matter; a Facebook spokeswoman declined to comment on rumors and speculation. Two days later, Data Center Knowledge reported local accounts and anonymous sources describing a campus of more than 400 acres, an expected initial investment of $1 billion, and about $20 billion over two decades. Those January investment figures were early, anonymously sourced estimates—not confirmed project commitments. Data Center Knowledge, January 25, 2018.

These were announcement-era expectations for the initial phase, not a final accounting of the completed project. Atlanta Journal-Constitution, March 7, 2018.

How does Stanton Springs fit into Atlanta’s data center market?
CBRE reported that the Atlanta data center market ended 2025 with 1,459.2 megawatts (MW) of inventory, up 458.8 MW year over year, a 2% vacancy rate, and 2,076 MW under construction. CBRE described Atlanta as the second-largest U.S. data center market, behind Northern Virginia. These are regional market figures, not capacity, vacancy, or construction statistics for Meta’s Stanton Springs facility. CBRE Atlanta Data Center MarketView, published March 4, 2026.
Is the Atlanta zoning debate about Meta’s Stanton Springs site?
No. In July 2026, Axios reported that Atlanta’s Zoning Committee held an ordinance that would allow data centers in Adair Park and the Historic West End District. A committee hold paused the process; Axios said that did not mean the ordinance was dead. That city zoning matter concerns neighborhoods in Atlanta and is separate from Meta’s site near Social Circle. Axios, July 2026.
