The company called it the eighth data center in its network, its first in continental Europe, and said the site doubled its European capacity alongside London.
When did Linode open its Frankfurt data center?
Linode announced the Frankfurt opening on August 3, 2015. Contemporary coverage described the facility as Linode’s first continental European data center and its eighth site overall.
Why did Linode choose Frankfurt?
Linode presented Frankfurt as a central European location that could serve developers, entrepreneurs, and businesses in Germany and across Europe. In its 2015 announcement, the company said more than a third of Europe’s internet traffic travelled through Frankfurt. That figure is Linode’s historical company claim; it should not be treated as a current, independently verified measurement.
What did the opening mean for European capacity?
Linode said the Frankfurt site doubled its European capacity while complementing its existing London data center. The expansion gave the company a continental-European location rather than relying solely on its United Kingdom presence.

How does the Frankfurt story fit Akamai’s current platform?
Akamai announced a definitive agreement to acquire Linode on February 15, 2022. Akamai’s technical documentation now describes Linodes as virtual machines on Akamai infrastructure, with availability across regions and pricing or plan availability that can vary by region.
That later ownership should be kept separate from the original opening. On November 26, 2024, Akamai announced a distinct Frankfurt core-region capacity expansion named de-fra-2. The announcement said the expansion was available to all customers at that time and listed new compute and networking hardware, Premium CPU instances, VPC private networking, Cloud Firewall, and cloud-init metadata support. Those are features of the later expansion announcement, not specifications established for Linode’s 2015 launch.
