AWS opened its Asia Pacific (Seoul) cloud region on January 6, 2016. The launch gave customers in South Korea and nearby markets regional access to AWS infrastructure, beginning with two Availability Zones. “Data centers” in the headline refers to AWS’s regional Availability Zone architecture—not a publicly disclosed list or count of individual buildings.

What AWS launched in Korea

The launch was the Asia Pacific (Seoul) Region, AWS’s fifth region in Asia Pacific and twelfth worldwide at the time. AWS identified the geography as South Korea; its current region code is ap-northeast-2.

Jeff Barr previewed the plan in November 2015: “I am happy to announce that we will be opening an AWS region in Korea in early 2016.” AWS cited regional infrastructure as a way to provide lower-latency access for customers and end users in Korea and surrounding markets. The announcement did not publish measured latency improvements.

Launch configuration on January 6, 2016

Seoul opened with two Availability Zones. AWS’s launch materials described the worldwide footprint at that point as 12 regions and 32 Availability Zones.

Why “data centers” is an imprecise description

AWS customers commonly describe a region as a local data-center presence, but an Availability Zone is not necessarily one building. AWS defines an Availability Zone as one or more discrete data centers in separate facilities, with redundant power, networking and connectivity.

That distinction matters: two Availability Zones at launch means two logical isolation zones, not necessarily two physical buildings. AWS has not disclosed a public count of individual Seoul facilities or their addresses in the cited launch material. The later increase to four Availability Zones likewise should not be converted into a four-building claim.

What the headline means for readers

  • What opened: AWS’s Seoul cloud region and its initial Availability Zones.
  • When: January 6, 2016.
  • Why it mattered: Customers could use AWS infrastructure in the Korean region rather than relying solely on a distant AWS region.
  • What changed over time: Seoul grew from two Availability Zones at launch to four in AWS’s current listing.
  • What remains unknown from these sources: Individual facility addresses, the number of physical buildings and measured latency gains.

Bottom line

Amazon did launch its first AWS cloud region in Korea in 2016, but the precise interpretation is important. The event was the opening of the Asia Pacific (Seoul) Region, initially with two Availability Zones and a defined set of AWS services—not the publication of a named inventory of Korean data-center buildings. AWS now lists four Availability Zones for the South Korea region.
