The Synology DVA3221 is worth considering if you need an on-premises surveillance system with GPU-backed video analytics as well as network storage. It is more than a four-bay NAS: it records and manages camera feeds, supports analytics such as face and license-plate recognition, and includes eight camera licenses. It is a harder fit if you only need file storage or basic motion recording, because the specialized hardware and any additional cameras, drives, licenses, or expansion hardware add to the system cost.
What is the Synology DVA3221?
The DVA3221 is a four-bay Deep Learning NVR that also runs Synology NAS and Surveillance Station functions. In practical terms, it combines a recorder and camera-management system with storage and analytics processing in one appliance. Synology announced it on October 15, 2020, positioning it for local video recording and GPU-accelerated analysis.
| Component | DVA3221 specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Atom C3538, quad-core, 2.1 GHz |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 |
| Memory | 8 GB DDR4 |
| Drive bays | Four hot-swappable SATA bays; drives are not included |
| Networking | Four 1GbE RJ-45 ports |
The GTX 1650 is dedicated to Deep Video Analytics. That distinction matters: the DVA3221 is designed to run analysis on recorded or incoming surveillance video, rather than simply store files or trigger a basic motion alert.
How many cameras can it handle, and are licenses included?
Synology specifies support for up to 32 camera feeds, with eight camera licenses included. Using more than eight cameras requires purchasing additional licenses. The stated feed maximum is not the same as a guarantee that every supported analytics task can run at maximum capacity on every camera stream; Synology publishes separate limits for analytics tasks.

Synology’s October 2020 launch announcement said the DVA3221 supported more than 7,600 camera models through ONVIF compatibility. That figure describes camera compatibility, not a promise that every model exposes the same functions or performs identically. Check the camera’s compatibility and feature support before choosing it.
The system can record and run analytics locally without an internet connection, according to Synology. Internet access is needed only for optional remote viewing or backups. Synology described the included software licenses as requiring no subscription; cameras beyond the included license count still require separately purchased licenses.

Analytics capacity depends on the task
Synology’s product specification lists these task-level maximums. These limits are distinct from the 32-feed camera ceiling.
| Analytics task | Published maximum |
|---|---|
| People and vehicle detection, without license-plate recognition | Up to 12 tasks |
| People and vehicle detection, with license-plate recognition | Up to 6 tasks |
| People counting | Up to 12 tasks |
| Vehicle counting | Up to 12 tasks |
| Intrusion detection | Up to 12 tasks |
| Face recognition | Up to 6 tasks |
For 4K recording, Synology says deep video analytics tasks are limited to eight. Plan around the resolution and analytics mix you actually intend to use rather than treating the feed maximum as an analytics-capacity figure. The specification also lists a face database capacity of up to 10,000 registrations.

- EXACT-MATCH UPGRADE — 32GB (2X16GB) kit DDR4-2666 (PC4-21300), 2Rx8 ECC, 1.2V, CL19, 260-pin SODIMM. The precise rank, voltage, and speed your system's memory controller expects, so it's recognized at full capacity and posts correctly.
- VERIFIED FITMENT — Direct replacement for D4ECSO-2666-16G-21S-V26. The 260-pin ECC SODIMM form factor required by ECC-capable NAS Devices and compact servers — not a desktop UDIMM. Spec-matched to your unit's memory-population rules.
- DATA INTEGRITY — On-module ECC catches and corrects single-bit errors on the fly — protecting against silent data corruption and unexpected reboots in the 24/7 RAID and storage workloads ECC NAS and compact-server systems run.
- CHECK YOUR CONFIG — NAS and system memory support varies by model. Check your unit's compatibility list and manual for supported capacities and approved DIMM population before purchase.
- LIFETIME SUPPORT — Backed by a lifetime replacement warranty and free US-based technical support.
What can its video analytics do?
Supported analytics include facial recognition, license-plate recognition, people and vehicle detection, people and vehicle counting, and intrusion detection. Surveillance Station can search recorded footage by attributes and events. Zone-based movement detection and counting can make it easier to find relevant activity than reviewing a continuous recording or relying only on ordinary motion recording.
These features are useful when a site needs to answer questions about who or what appeared, where activity occurred, or how often people or vehicles passed through an area. They are not a reason to assume that every camera, scene, or analytics configuration will deliver the same result: confirm camera support and plan for the task limits above.

What drives and storage configurations work?
The four internal bays accept 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA hard drives or SSDs. Drives are sold separately. Synology documents these storage configurations:
- Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)
- RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, and RAID 10
- JBOD and Basic
For additional capacity, the DVA3221 can connect to two separately purchased Synology DX517 five-bay expansion units. With both units, the total drive count can reach 14. Expansion adds hardware cost as well as drives, so it is worth estimating retention needs before buying.

Is it a better choice than a basic NAS or NVR?
That depends on whether you need the analytics and how much of the surveillance system you want to keep on site. A basic NAS can be the more straightforward choice for file storage; a recorder used only for basic motion recording may be enough for simpler camera setups. The DVA3221’s case is strongest when storage, recording, camera management, and GPU-backed analytics belong together in one local appliance.
| Decision factor | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Analytics | Choose the DVA3221 when face, vehicle, intrusion, or counting analysis is a core need rather than an occasional extra. |
| Camera scale | Account for the included licenses, paid licenses for additional cameras, and task limits at the selected resolution. |
| Storage growth | Compare the four internal bays with the cost and added capacity of DX517 expansion. |
| Ownership model | Its recording and analytics can operate locally; optional remote viewing and backups are the cited reasons to connect it to the internet. |
| Total system cost | Budget for the appliance, drives, cameras, licenses beyond the included allowance, and any expansion hardware you need. |
Availability and buying considerations
A Japanese distributor listing labels the DVA3221 discontinued in Japan. That is a market-specific signal, not proof that sales have ended everywhere. Check local stock, price, warranty coverage, and whether Synology offers a suitable replacement in your country before committing to a system built around this model.
Before purchase, work out the camera count, resolution, analytics tasks, desired recording retention, and storage growth. Those choices determine whether the DVA3221’s specialized analytics are useful enough to justify the cost and configuration effort.
