Those advantages do not guarantee that a proposed facility can obtain power when needed: the U.S. Commercial Service identifies limited access to additional energy capacity as a potential short-term constraint. Iceland’s industry is economically significant and expanding, but its reported investment, employment and efficiency figures come from different sources and must be read with their dates and qualifications.
Why are data centers in Iceland?
The country combines three characteristics that matter to operators: naturally cool weather, abundant renewable generation and a stable, safe operating environment. The U.S. Commercial Service describes Iceland’s data center industry as “relatively new but has increasing importance” and lists cool weather, renewable energy and safety among its location advantages.
Cooler conditions can reduce cooling work
Outdoor temperatures that are low for much of the year can support air-side or other economizer cooling for more hours than in warmer locations. Less mechanical refrigeration can improve a facility’s power-use efficiency, although the result depends on the building design, IT load, humidity controls, redundancy requirements and local weather. Data Centers Iceland reports a sector PUE range of 1.05–1.2. PUE (power usage effectiveness) is total facility power divided by IT equipment power; the lower the number, the less overhead is used for cooling and other infrastructure. That range is an association claim, not an independently verified result for every Icelandic site.
Renewable generation is a national advantage, not a project guarantee
Iceland’s electricity system relies heavily on hydropower and geothermal generation. The National Energy Authority homepage displays 14,195 GWh of hydro, 5,916 GWh of geothermal and 5 GWh of wind, but the reporting period for those displayed figures is not clear from the available page extract. They should not be treated as a dated annual total without checking the underlying series.

Nor does a renewable national mix prove that a particular data center buys exclusively renewable electricity under a traceable contract. A project’s result depends on its utility agreement, physical connection, market arrangements and the evidence an operator provides about procurement.
Safety and market position
The government trade guide also presents Iceland as a safe environment and identifies opportunities in data-center equipment and technology. Its market overview is useful for understanding the country’s positioning, but it does not quantify latency, international connectivity, site readiness or equipment lead times. Those factors require project-specific due diligence.

Is Iceland’s renewable energy enough for data centers?
Not automatically. The key qualification is access to additional capacity at the right location and time. The U.S. Commercial Service warns that limited access to additional energy capacity could temporarily constrain industry growth. National renewable production and a proposed facility’s ability to secure a firm connection are separate questions.
Questions a proposed operator must answer
- How many megawatts can the relevant transmission or distribution node deliver after existing commitments?
- What connection date, upgrade work and curtailment terms would apply?
- Is the quoted supply physically delivered, contractually matched with renewable generation, or described only by the national generation mix?
- Can the site obtain firm power during periods of maintenance, hydrological variation or network congestion?
- Are land, fiber routes, substations, construction labor and imported equipment available on the same schedule?
Neither the commercial guide nor the cited national statistics establishes site-by-site available capacity, connection timelines or a quantified current project pipeline. A location comparison should therefore treat “renewable Icelandic power” as an attractive starting condition, not proof that spare capacity is immediately available.

How much electricity do data centers use in Iceland?
A current national data-center consumption figure or share of Iceland’s electricity use is not established here. Statistics Iceland’s electricity supply-and-use table covers 2014–2024 by economic activity and uses terajoules; it was last updated on 25 December 2025. The accessible table interface did not expose the underlying data-center values, so quoting a percentage would risk presenting an unverified number as fact.
What can be said with confidence
Iceland’s total electricity system is large enough to support a data-center industry, but the relevant planning metric is spare capacity at a specific connection point. Consumption also changes as facilities are commissioned, expanded or temporarily run below design load. A serious estimate should use the Statistics Iceland activity-level series, then state the year, unit, activity definition and whether the figure represents delivered electricity or another accounting measure.

What the latest national accounts say about the industry
Statistics Iceland’s 2026 second-quarter national-accounts release reported record investment in data-center-related industries for the quarter and an estimated 10.6% volume increase. It also said that much of the real increase in imported goods was connected with data-center activity. This is evidence of a strong investment quarter, not a guaranteed annual growth rate or proof that every announced project will proceed.
Investment has been volatile
The preceding annual release provides an important qualification. Imports of computer components for data centers rose significantly in 2024 Q4 and in 2025 Q1–Q2, then declined considerably in 2025 Q3 and were relatively low in Q4. Statistics Iceland said those imports significantly influenced quarterly capital-formation results. Quarterly spikes can therefore reflect the timing of equipment deliveries rather than a smooth expansion path.

How large is Iceland’s data-center sector?
Data Centers Iceland’s 2025 fact sheet, reporting conditions at the end of 2024, gives the following industry snapshot:
| Measure | End-2024 figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Turnover | $179 million | Industry-association figure |
| Investment | $340 million | Industry-association figure |
| Direct employees | 120 | Industry-association figure |
| Others on site | 360 | Association estimate |
| Total employment impact | 960 | Modeled association estimate, not an official employment count |
The association’s older 2024 fact sheet, covering end-2023, reported $174 million in turnover, $212 million in investment and more than 110 employees. The two snapshots suggest movement in reported activity, but they are not a substitute for one consistent official time series: the publisher, definitions and measurement dates differ from national accounts.
How to evaluate an Icelandic data-center proposal
- Verify power availability. Obtain a written capacity and connection assessment from the relevant network and utility entities, including upgrade requirements and timing.
- Document the electricity claim. Separate the national generation mix from the facility’s contract, certificates, physical supply and accounting method.
- Model cooling and PUE for the actual design. Treat the 1.05–1.2 range as an industry-reported reference, not a guaranteed site result.
- Check network and site readiness. Confirm diverse fiber, latency to intended users, land, substations, permits, construction capacity and equipment logistics.
- Use dated economic evidence. Read quarterly investment and import data as timing-sensitive indicators, then test whether the proposed project has committed financing and a schedule.
What Iceland’s advantages do—and do not—prove
- They do support: a strong case for investigating Iceland where low cooling overhead, renewable generation and a safe environment align with the workload.
- They do not support: assuming unlimited power, immediate grid connection, universally renewable contractual supply, a uniform PUE, or a fixed national electricity-consumption share.
- They do show economically: a relatively young industry with a record investment quarter in 2026 Q2, alongside pronounced quarter-to-quarter import volatility.
Iceland is therefore best understood as a promising but capacity-constrained data-center location. The decisive evidence for any individual facility will be its power connection, procurement documentation, cooling design, network route and delivery schedule—not the country’s renewable reputation alone.
