LinkedIn’s reported Texas expansion was an $116 million, 11-year lease for data center capacity in the Dallas area—not a report that LinkedIn built and owned a Texas facility. Data Center Knowledge linked the deal to Digital Realty using industry sources, while noting that Digital Realty had not named its tenant.
What LinkedIn leased in Texas
Data Center Knowledge reported on November 6, 2013, that an SEC filing identified an $116 million lease lasting 11 years for substantial data center space in Dallas. The reported transaction was a lease of capacity; the article did not describe LinkedIn constructing or owning the facility. The $116 million was the reported lease value, not a construction budget or equipment price.
The outlet connected the lease with Digital Realty based on industry sources, but emphasized that Digital Realty had not disclosed the tenant. That distinction matters: the report identified the LinkedIn transaction through its own reporting, rather than citing a public Digital Realty statement naming LinkedIn.
What Digital Realty said about a 7-megawatt lease
Digital Realty CEO Michael Foust described a separate, unnamed tenant in comments quoted by Data Center Knowledge: “We’re pleased to announce that on Monday this week, we signed a 7-megawatt lease with a social networking company that had outgrown its existing colocation footprint.” Foust did not name LinkedIn in that statement. The outlet made the connection between the unnamed social networking company and LinkedIn separately, based on industry sources.

The article also reported that LinkedIn had secured a 6-megawatt wholesale lease in Northern Virginia earlier in 2013. Taken together, the Texas and Northern Virginia deals amounted to 13 megawatts of data center space leased during 2013, according to the outlet. These are figures from the 2013 report, not a measurement of LinkedIn’s present-day capacity or power use.
How Dallas fit into LinkedIn’s reported data center footprint
Data Center Knowledge said the potential Dallas location was Digital Realty’s Digital Dallas campus in Richardson, Texas, but presented it as a likely candidate, not a confirmed building match. The campus was described in that article as spanning 70 acres with 800,000 square feet; those figures refer to the campus, not to LinkedIn’s leased area.

The report contrasted large wholesale leases with colocation. It said LinkedIn also rented dedicated cages in Equinix-operated facilities. A wholesale lease provides large blocks of finished data hall capacity, while colocation involves renting space within a provider’s facility. The article framed large wholesale tenants as valuable anchor customers for data center developers.

The article said LinkedIn had 259 million users at the time, a contemporaneous figure from November 2013 rather than a current user count. Its account documents a reported expansion during that period, but it does not establish whether the Texas lease is active today, which exact building or address housed the leased space, or LinkedIn’s current data center strategy, power demand, cooling, or water use.
