Liquid-cooled enterprise SSDs use a cold plate to conduct heat from the drive into a circulating coolant loop. In dense AI servers, this can make storage part of the server’s cooling design instead of relying only on airflow. It is a specialized platform-level approach: the exact SSD, cold plate, server bay and service procedure must work together.

Why cool SSDs in AI servers?

AI systems place high-speed storage close to CPUs and GPUs, and dense server configurations make storage thermals one consideration in the overall cooling plan. KIOXIA describes E1.S as a form factor intended for AI and hyperscale systems, where flash storage can sit close to those processors. That is a vendor’s description of the design context, not evidence that SSDs account for a particular share of data-center heat.

Liquid-cooled storage is therefore best understood as one component of a broader thermal architecture. The available product materials do not establish that changing an SSD alone eliminates server fans or produces a specific facility-wide energy saving.

How does a cold plate cool an SSD?

A cold plate makes thermal contact with the SSD assembly. Heat from the controller and flash components conducts into the plate, and coolant flowing through it carries that heat into the server’s liquid-cooling loop. The result depends on more than the presence of liquid: the board layout and the plate’s contact with heat-producing components determine what can be cooled effectively.

Micron notes that distributing heat-generating parts across both faces of a conventional drive can complicate cold-plate cooling. Concentrating most of those components on one face can give the plate more effective contact. Solidigm’s materials also identify cooling both sides and retaining hot-swap serviceability as design challenges.

Which enterprise E1.S SSDs are described as liquid-cooled?

Drive What the vendor says What to verify
KIOXIA NX1 Series KIOXIA announced the E1.S PCIe 5.0 NVMe data-center family in July 2026. Its 9.5 mm model supports direct liquid cooling and air cooling; its 15 mm model supports air cooling. The stated family capacity range is 1.92 TB to 15.36 TB, with 1 drive write per day (DWPD) for read-intensive applications. KIOXIA NX1 Confirm the capacity, thickness, server qualification and supported cooling configuration for the exact SKU. KIOXIA reports up to 38% higher sequential write performance and up to 20% higher random write performance than its previous generation; these are manufacturer comparisons, not independent benchmark results.
Solidigm D7-PS1010 Solidigm announced an enterprise E1.S 9.5 mm SSD using cold-plate technology for AI deployments in March 2025. The announcement presents cooling and hot-swap serviceability as design goals. Solidigm D7-PS1010 Confirm the exact drive and cold-plate assembly, server qualification, hot-swap procedure and currently available configuration with Solidigm or the system provider.
Micron 9650 Micron’s product page identifies its data-center SSD family, while a separate technical article explains liquid-cooled storage design considerations. Micron 9650 product information Micron technical article A family page or general design article does not establish that every SKU or form factor supports liquid cooling. Verify the specific drive and platform configuration.

KIOXIA executive Neville Ichhaporia described the role of the form factor this way: “E1.S form factor SSDs are becoming increasingly important for AI and hyperscale system designs, keeping high-speed flash storage close to the CPU and GPU.” That is a vendor executive’s perspective, not an independently established industry consensus.

Can a liquid-cooled E1.S SSD be treated as a drop-in drive?

No. E1.S is an enterprise server form factor, and liquid-cooled models require a compatible server and cooling arrangement. Do not assume an E1.S SSD will fit or function in a standard desktop PC, or that a generic cold plate will suit a particular drive. Confirm the bay, connector, drive thickness, cold-plate assembly and platform qualification as a matched configuration.

Cooling also varies within a product family: for example, KIOXIA specifies direct liquid cooling for the NX1 9.5 mm model, but air cooling for its 15 mm model. The family name alone is not enough to identify a supported setup.

Can a liquid-cooled SSD still be hot-swapped?

Possibly, but hot-swap support depends on the specific drive, plate assembly and server procedure. Solidigm identifies hot swapping as a limitation of traditional one-sided direct liquid cooling and describes its D7-PS1010 cold-plate design as addressing serviceability. That does not establish that every D7-PS1010 installation—or every liquid-cooled SSD—can be removed without disrupting the cooling loop. Ask the system provider how the assembly is isolated, disconnected and replaced in the qualified platform.

What should buyers compare?

Use the complete server configuration as the unit of comparison, rather than ranking drives only by headline transfer rate.

  • Form factor and fit: Verify E1.S thickness, bay, connector and the server platform’s qualification for the exact SKU.
  • Cooling coverage: Establish which board face and components contact the plate, how the coolant loop connects, and whether the exact drive configuration supports liquid cooling.
  • Serviceability: Get the hot-swap procedure for the SSD-and-plate assembly, including whether servicing it requires work on the cooling loop.
  • Workload fit: Compare sequential and random access performance against the workload you expect. Treat vendor comparisons as vendor claims unless independent testing supports them.
  • Capacity and endurance: Check the exact capacity and endurance rating, including the workload assumptions attached to a rating such as DWPD.
  • System implementation: Confirm the server integrator’s qualified configuration and how the drive fits into the system’s cooling and maintenance design.
