Its key trade-off is QLC flash paired with a dynamic SLC cache: once that cache is exhausted, long writes can slow sharply. The model’s “rock-bottom prices” reputation is historical; current pricing and availability have not been established here.
What the Intel SSD 660p is
The 660p is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD using PCIe 3.0 x4 and Intel 64-layer QLC 3D NAND. Intel listed 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities in its 2019 product brief. M.2 2280 describes the card’s physical dimensions—22 mm wide and 80 mm long—not its data protocol. Intel lists the drive as under 10 grams.

| Interface and protocol | PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe |
| NAND | 64-layer QLC 3D NAND |
| Available capacities | 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB |
| Sequential performance | Up to 1,800 MB/s read and up to 1,800 MB/s write |

Intel’s performance figures are maximum ratings, not promises that every capacity or computer will reach those numbers. The brief says performance varies by capacity and system configuration. TBW means terabytes written; the endurance ratings are manufacturer specifications used for comparison and warranty terms, not a prediction that a drive will fail at an exact write total. See Intel’s product brief for the listed specifications.
How fast is the 660p in real use?
For routine consumer activity and shorter transfers, reviewers found the 660p responsive and competitive for its intended value-oriented class. Its peak sequential ratings—up to 1,800 MB/s in either direction—describe favorable conditions and do not tell the whole story for a very large, uninterrupted write.

Why write speed can fall
The 660p uses part of its QLC flash as an SLC cache, allowing incoming data to be written faster temporarily. Tom’s Hardware reported static cache sizes of 6 GB, 12 GB, and 24 GB by capacity, alongside a dynamic cache that shrinks as the drive fills and can grow when space is freed. This helps explain why a nearly empty drive can absorb a burst more quickly than it can sustain a prolonged write. Tom’s Hardware’s updated review describes the cache behavior and test context.
What happens in a long write
In Tom’s Hardware’s worst-case extended-write test of the 1 TB model, the drive fell to about 100 MB/s after 130 GB had been written from an empty state. That is a result from a particular review workload, not a universal speed limit: actual behavior depends on capacity, how full the SSD is, workload, and system conditions. It is nevertheless a meaningful warning if you routinely move very large files or record repeated high-volume captures.

PCWorld likewise found good typical-use performance but noted a sharp write-speed drop when the cache is exhausted or the drive is getting full. StorageReview characterized the intended use as bursty everyday work with idle time between writes, allowing the cache to adjust. See the PCWorld review and StorageReview’s review.
Does the 660p slow down when full?
It can. The dynamic portion of the cache contracts as stored data increases, reducing the space available for fast burst writes. If a long transfer outlasts the available cache, subsequent writes go directly to QLC flash and can be much slower. For ordinary use with pauses between writes, that limitation may be less noticeable; for sustained write-heavy work, it is central to the buying decision.

Will the Intel 660p work in your laptop or desktop?
Check the computer’s manual or motherboard specifications before buying. The system needs an M.2 slot that supports PCIe/NVMe, as well as physical clearance for an M.2 2280 card. An M.2 slot that supports only SATA does not establish compatibility with this PCIe NVMe drive. PCWorld also flags the importance of checking the host’s supported interface; consult its compatibility discussion alongside your device documentation.
How much can you write to the Intel 660p?
Intel’s listed endurance is 100 TBW for 512 GB, 200 TBW for 1 TB, and 400 TBW for 2 TB, with a five-year limited warranty. Those figures scale with capacity and should be read as manufacturer endurance ratings, not as a precise lifespan or a claim that the SSD stops working immediately after that amount is written. For a workload with unusually heavy daily writes, compare the applicable capacity’s TBW rating and warranty against alternatives before choosing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Intel SSD 660p still worth it?
It can make sense for a compatible system and ordinary consumer workloads if the price is attractive relative to current alternatives. But the historical low-price positioning does not establish today’s price, stock, or value. Compare the actual current price per usable capacity, warranty, rated TBW, and sustained write behavior—especially if your work involves large transfers, repeated captures, or other write-heavy tasks. Do not judge it solely by the peak sequential figures.
