Neither HDDs nor SSDs are universally greener. SSDs use less electricity in many workloads, but that does not automatically cancel out manufacturing impacts. HDDs and SSDs can also rank differently for climate emissions, resource depletion and toxicity. A fair comparison matches usable capacity, workload and service life, then states which environmental impact it measures.
Why there is no single “greener” winner
“Greener” can mean lower greenhouse-gas emissions, less electricity use, lower resource depletion, lower toxicity or a better end-of-life outcome. These measures do not necessarily point to the same drive. A result for one impact category—or one model and set of assumptions—cannot establish that all HDDs or SSDs are environmentally preferable overall.
For a useful comparison, consider the drive’s full life cycle: manufacturing, operation and end-of-life treatment. Match the usable capacity, workload and period of service as closely as possible. Device-level power or carbon figures alone can mislead if one drive stores more data, does different work or lasts longer.
What the published comparisons show
Resource depletion and toxicity
A 2019 study by Lim et al. compared HDD and SSD cases with the same capacity. In the study’s inventory and impact categories, the SSD had 86–94% lower resource-depletion potentials and 87–94% lower toxicity potentials, but 33% higher potential for indium. The authors linked the lower resource-depletion results mainly to lower amounts of gold, copper, palladium, ruthenium and platinum in the SSD case. These are category-specific findings from that study, not a verdict on every drive or every environmental impact. Read the study in Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management.

Modeled carbon for data-centre drives
In a 2025 comparison, Seagate modeled a 30 TB Mozaic 3+ HDD and a 30.72 TB generic data-centre SSD over five years. The report gives embodied-carbon estimates of less than 1 kg CO₂ per TB for the HDD case and 160 kg CO₂ per TB for the SSD case. Seagate says public life-cycle assessment data for a data-centre SSD was unavailable, so it estimated the SSD figure using published research. Treat these as the company’s estimates for those specified data-centre cases—not as an independent, matched comparison of typical consumer drives. Read Seagate’s 2025 sustainability report.
Manufacturing and use both contribute
A product-specific life-cycle assessment of Western Digital’s WD Green SATA SSD attributed 51% of its climate-change impact to use, 46% to manufacturing, 3% to distribution and less than 1% to end of life. Those figures apply to that SSD assessment and its assumptions; they do not compare an HDD with an SSD. They do show why low operating power alone cannot settle the whole-life question. Workload changes electricity use
A University of California eScholarship paper models storage energy costs by I/O workload category and includes HDD and SSD measurements. Its practical lesson is that energy depends on what storage is doing, including its read/write pattern and active versus idle time. The paper is older, so its measurements should not be treated as current product specifications. Read the eScholarship paper.
How to compare drives for your situation
- Set the impact you care about. Decide whether you are comparing climate emissions, operating electricity, resource depletion, toxicity or end-of-life effects. Do not combine different categories into one unsupported winner.
- Match what the drives provide. Compare equal usable capacity, similar utilization and a similar amount of useful work. Note how much capacity you actually use.
- Describe the workload. A drive used mostly idle is not equivalent to one handling frequent reads and writes. Include active time and workload pattern when considering electricity use.
- Use the same life-cycle boundary. Look for manufacturing, operation and end-of-life treatment, and check whether the estimate includes system-level effects such as cooling.
- Check the assumptions and source. Identify the drive model, capacity, service period, year and electricity context. Distinguish a peer-reviewed category-level study from a product-specific assessment or manufacturer estimate.
A 2022 HotCarbon paper, “The Dirty Secret of SSDs: Embodied Carbon,” focuses on estimating SSD embodied carbon and storage-system trade-offs. It is useful background for why manufacturing emissions belong in the comparison, but it does not establish a universal ranking for current consumer drives. Read the paper.

Service life, reuse and disposal matter too
Keeping a suitable drive in service can avoid some impacts associated with replacing it, though the balance depends on the drive’s condition and the work it needs to do. A 2020 HDD recovery-pathway life-cycle assessment found reuse preferable for global-warming potential among the pathways it compared, estimating 5–18 kg CO₂-equivalent avoided per drive life cycle versus virgin production and shredding for aluminium recovery. That result is conditional on those scenarios; it does not settle whether a particular drive is safe to reuse or how it should be handled locally. Read the recovery-pathway study.
Before passing on or recycling a drive, consider data security and use a reputable local recovery or disposal route. The environmental comparison alone cannot determine the appropriate handling for a drive containing sensitive data.

What this means when buying or replacing storage
There is no established current, independent whole-life carbon comparison that matches contemporary consumer HDDs and SSDs for workload, usable capacity, electricity mix, lifetime and end-of-life assumptions. Without that, it is not possible to name a universal carbon winner for consumer storage.
If you need a replacement, choose for the capacity and workload you actually need, and keep a suitable drive in service rather than replacing it solely on the assumption that one technology is always greener. For a specific environmental ranking, look for comparable product-level life-cycle assessments; general power figures or a study of a different capacity and use case are not enough.
