KDE Frameworks 6.20.0 was released on November 14, 2025. It is a Qt library release for KDE and other Qt developers, not a Plasma desktop update. The release collects targeted fixes and feature updates across individual frameworks; KDE’s current Frameworks series has since moved on, with 6.30.0 announced on September 9, 2026.

What KDE Frameworks 6.20.0 is

KDE Frameworks is a collection of add-on libraries built with Qt. KDE software and third-party Qt applications can use these libraries for functions such as indexing, icons, syntax highlighting, networking and UI integration. Frameworks 6.20.0 is therefore most relevant to application developers, maintainers and distribution packagers.

KDE Community described 6.20.0 as “part of a series of planned monthly releases making improvements available to developers in a quick and predictable manner.”

Changes by framework

Framework Changes in 6.20.0 Why developers may care
Baloo Baloo now skips application/mbox files larger than 10 MB. balooctl writes configuration changes before enabling or disabling indexing. Large mailbox files are excluded by the documented threshold, and indexer state changes are saved before the command switches indexing on or off.
Bluez Qt rfkill writes were moved to a thread. The change concerns how Bluetooth radio-blocking operations are handled internally.
Breeze Icons Fixes starred icons; adds right-to-left variants for the open-link and document-send icons; adds external-link-symbolic as an alias for open-link-symbolic. Icon themes gain corrected states, RTL coverage and a compatibility alias for applications requesting the external-link name.
Extra CMake Modules Headers are shown in Qt Creator. Projects using the module’s CMake integration can expose header files more clearly in the IDE.
Syntax Highlighting Adds D2 syntax highlighting and Starlark highlighting; updates C++ classes for Qt 6.10; expands QFace highlighting. Editors and tools based on this framework recognize more languages and newer Qt C++ constructs.
Attica and Threadweaver The listed test changes replace QVERIFY with QCOMPARE. Tests report comparison failures with the more specific expected-versus-actual form.

These are representative entries from KDE’s framework-by-framework change list, not a claim that they are the release’s complete contents. The announcement does not provide a measured system-performance gain or a statistic covering affected applications.

Compatibility requirements

Qt version

KDE states that Frameworks 6.20.0 requires Qt 6.8.0. Projects targeting this release should verify that their development and build environments provide a compatible Qt 6 installation.

Do not confuse it with Frameworks 6.30

Frameworks 6.30.0, announced on September 9, 2026, is a later release with a stated requirement of Qt 6.9.0. Its dependency requirement should not be applied retroactively to 6.20.0.

How to obtain or build 6.20.0

Distribution packages

For Linux systems, KDE recommends using Frameworks packages supplied by your distribution. Package names, repository availability and update timing vary by distribution, so check the repositories for the specific release you run.

Build one Tier 1 framework

KDE’s guidance allows a single Tier 1 framework to be built with CMake and make. In practice, you need a Qt 6.8.0-compatible development environment and the framework’s development dependencies before configuring the project with CMake and compiling it.

Build the full Frameworks stack

Contributors and developers tracking the complete set of frameworks are directed to kdesrc-build, KDE’s source-build workflow for coordinating the many repositories and their dependencies. Follow KDE’s release and developer documentation for the exact source checkout and build configuration.

Source availability

KDE provides the complete 6.20.0 source through its Frameworks release information. Source builds are most appropriate when you need a particular framework version before your distribution packages it, or when contributing and testing against KDE’s codebase.

Who should update?

  • Application developers: Review the framework-specific changes that your application uses, especially syntax highlighting, icon names and Baloo behavior.
  • Packagers and maintainers: Confirm the Qt 6.8.0 requirement and package the release according to your distribution’s policies.
  • KDE contributors: Use the documented kdesrc-build workflow when working across the framework set.
  • Most desktop users: You normally receive Frameworks through your distribution’s KDE or Qt packages; this release is not a separate Plasma installation.
