Most 9500-8i failures are caused by the storage path or software pairing rather than a dead adapter. Check the SFF-8654 cable and backplane, device power, PCIe seating and airflow, adapter profile, and the firmware/driver combination in that order. StorCLI error counters and a one-drive known-good test usually identify whether the cable, disk, slot, configuration, or HBA is at fault.
What the Broadcom 9500-8i is—and what can go wrong
The 9500-8i is an active PCIe Gen4 x8 Tri-Mode HBA with one internal x8 SFF-8654 (SlimSAS) connector. It supports SAS and SATA storage, plus NVMe devices when the adapter, cable and backplane topology support that profile. Broadcom lists StorCLI, LSA and HII as management tools. The product specification lists support for up to 1,024 SAS/SATA devices and 32 NVMe devices; those are maximum supported counts, not a promise that every backplane or cable can expose them.
Broadcom specifies 0–55 °C operation, 5.96 W typical power and more than 5,000,000 hours MTBF at 40 °C. These are product specifications, not a guarantee that a card will remain stable in a poorly ventilated chassis. A blocked heatsink, high inlet temperature or adjacent hot PCIe device can still produce link failures or resets.
Typical symptoms include an empty drive list, only some disks appearing, links repeatedly dropping, a controller reset during boot or I/O, and a card that works with one backplane but not another.

Fast diagnosis by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely areas | First check |
|---|---|---|
| No drives at all | Wrong or damaged SFF-8654 cable, unpowered devices, incorrect profile, unsupported backplane wiring, PCIe seating or slot configuration | Power sequencing, cable orientation and condition, then storcli /cx show profile |
| Only one lane, port group or subset of disks appears | Partially inserted cable, damaged lane, wide-port or multilane topology mismatch, backplane fault | Reseat or substitute the cable and test a single known-good drive |
| Controller repeatedly resets | Thermal or airflow problem, unstable PCIe slot, firmware/driver mismatch, power sequencing or a failing component | Inspect cooling and slot seating; record all software versions before changing firmware |
| Drives appear after a reboot but not a cold boot | Storage devices or backplane power up after the host, or the link trains inconsistently | Confirm the enclosure and disks are powered before or at the same time as the server |
| Link or media errors rise on one disk | Cable, connector, drive or backplane path | Save StorCLI error counters and SATA SMART data before clearing anything |
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Power down and inspect the hardware
- Shut the server down normally and remove AC power according to the platform service procedure.
- Reseat the 9500-8i in a slot that provides the expected PCIe lanes. Check bracket clearance, connector engagement and whether a heatsink, riser or neighboring card blocks airflow.
- Verify that every SAS, SATA or NVMe device and the backplane actually powers on. A controller cannot discover a device that is powered after the host or has no stable enclosure power.
- Check the card’s airflow path. The 0–55 °C specification assumes an installation capable of keeping the adapter within that range.
2. Validate the SFF-8654 path
The internal connector is a common failure point. Use the correct SFF-8654 cable for the backplane and device type; do not substitute a cable merely because its plug fits. Inspect both ends for bent contacts, latch damage, sharp bends and incomplete insertion.
Keep the cable within Broadcom’s 1-meter guidance. Replace it with a known-good cable before replacing the HBA. A single wide-port SAS device or a multilane NVMe device must have lane wiring that matches the backplane and the controller; do not split lanes across incompatible controller cores or backplane zones.

- The Broadcom host bus adapter serves as a hardware interface for storage devices.
- Ports: PCIe x8 4.0, 1 SlimSAS SFF-8654 ort for up to 8 internal SATA / SAS drives
- The maximum data transfer rate is 12 Gbps.
- IT mode firmware is installed.
- Full and low profile brackets are included.
3. Check the adapter profile
Display the current profile with:
storcli /cx show profile
Use the profile appropriate to the attached SAS/SATA devices, NVMe devices or supported mixed configuration. If you change the profile, reboot before judging the result. A profile mismatch can make a correctly wired device look absent.
4. Treat firmware and drivers as a matched set
Record the adapter firmware, adapter BIOS/UEFI, server BIOS/UEFI, operating system, OS driver and StorCLI versions. Obtain the 9500-8i package from Broadcom, then compare the complete combination with Broadcom’s Compatibility Guide or the server manufacturer’s certification matrix. Broadcom’s download center separates essential drivers from optional management utilities, so installing a utility alone does not establish a supported driver combination.

Do not update only the firmware because a newer file is available. A firmware/driver mismatch can cause discovery failures, link instability or resets even when the cable and drives are sound. On an OEM-branded server, the OEM release normally takes precedence over a generic package unless the OEM documentation says otherwise.
5. Collect controller and drive evidence
Use StorCLI to inspect controller state and inventory before swapping multiple parts. Enclosure and slot identifiers vary, so substitute the values shown by your inventory:
Rank #4
- Connects up to 1024 SAS/SATA devices or 32 NVMe devices
- Provides maximum connectivity and performance for high-end servers and applications
- Support critical applications with the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 connectivity

storcli /c0 show— review controller state and basic inventory.storcli /c0/eall/sall show— list the drives visible through controller 0.storcli /c0/eX/sY show errorcounters— inspect link and media error counters for enclosureX, slotY.storcli /c0/eX/sY show smart— inspect SMART information where the SATA device exposes it.
Save the output before clearing counters. A counter that rises only with one cable, slot or disk points toward that physical path; counters that remain clean while the controller resets point more toward slot, thermal, profile or firmware causes.
6. Isolate one variable at a time
- Disconnect nonessential storage and connect one known-good, compatible drive with a known-good cable.
- Boot and check whether the controller and drive are visible.
- Move that same drive and cable to the suspect backplane port or slot, changing only one element.
- Repeat with a second known-good drive if necessary.
If the failure follows the cable or drive, replace that component. If several known-good drives and cables fail on the same HBA and slot, investigate the adapter, PCIe slot, profile and software pairing. If the HBA works in another supported slot or chassis, the original slot, riser or power environment becomes the leading suspect.

Do you need “IT mode”?
The 9500-8i is sold as a Tri-Mode HBA, so the practical question is whether its current profile and host software match the attached SAS, SATA and NVMe devices. Do not assume that flashing an unofficial or unrelated “IT mode” image will fix missing drives. First inspect the profile with storcli /cx show profile, select the supported profile for the topology, reboot, and verify the firmware/driver pair against Broadcom or the server OEM.
If the operating system still sees no device after a correct profile, known-good cable, proper power sequencing and compatible software have been verified, the issue is not solved by changing terminology from HBA to IT mode; continue with path isolation and support escalation.
When to replace the cable, drive, HBA or slot
Replace the cable first when
- Error counters increase on a path that changes when the cable is moved or replaced.
- Only lanes served by one cable or connector disappear.
- The cable exceeds 1 meter, has visible damage or is not the correct SFF-8654 wiring for the backplane.
Suspect the drive or backplane when
- One disk reports SMART warnings or media errors while other disks remain healthy.
- The problem follows a particular drive to another known-good port.
- Several cables work elsewhere but fail on one backplane port or enclosure.
Suspect the HBA, slot or software when
- Multiple known-good drives and cables fail together.
- The controller resets with clean drive counters and adequate cooling.
- The failure changes when the adapter is moved to a supported PCIe slot.
- The installed firmware, driver and OEM certification do not form a documented compatible combination.
Escalation package
Before contacting the server OEM or Broadcom, save the StorCLI controller, inventory, error-counter and SMART output; the exact firmware, BIOS/UEFI, driver, OS and StorCLI versions; the server model and PCIe slot or riser; the SFF-8654 cable and backplane part numbers; and the sequence that reproduces the failure. Broadcom states a three-year warranty and an advanced-replacement path for this model. Use that support route after cabling, airflow, profile, power sequencing and compatibility checks have been completed.
Practical verdict
Start with the physical path, not an immediate HBA replacement: correct SFF-8654 cable and topology, devices powered at boot, adequate cooling and a suitable PCIe slot. Then verify the adapter profile and the firmware/driver pair. StorCLI counters plus a one-drive known-good test provide the evidence for replacing a cable or disk. If several known-good paths still fail, escalate the adapter with complete logs and version information.
